The adaptor Wally World and Crutchfield have is for 1986 up Toyotas. and they are the same at both stores. There must have been a change in the color codes. Try checking the 85 FSM at North Carolina Toyota Territory Off-Roaders Association
The brackets you need are on eBay used. One set right now is only $17. Try searching eBay for "4Runner radio bracket." I get a lot of stuff from eBay and it usually arrives 2-3 days after I pay for it.
I just did a new radio in my 00 4Runner last week and noticed the wire adaptor was not for 85 and older Toyotas.
I also bought 4 nuts I needed from Toyota last week and it was over $12 for them and they took two days to arrive at the dealer. I can't imagine what they charge for the radio bracket.
FWIW the Radio Shack nearest to me no longer sells stuff for automotive sound. They are all about selling TV's and cell phones. I was looking online for an antenna for my 1st gen and they had one "online only."

I ordered my brackets today, part of the problem was the previous owner pulled the fuse for the cigarette lighter and the clock hooked that back up so now I am still trying to figure out all of the wiring.

As far as I know the radio surround is the same in 84-89 4Runners.
Is your 4Runner a DLX ? Mine is an 89 DLX and they did not come with rear speakers but the grill holes are there in the rear. In most cases Toyota left wires for accessories but they did not leave wire for the rear speakers.
I found the wiring color codes:

Yes it is, that is probably the reason, I guess I'll be running some speaker wire tomorrow.

just installed a stereo into my son's 88 4runner yesterday. had to figure out the hack-job wiring that was in there. but..we also put 4 new speakers in and ran new wires. it all came to a stop when I was puzzled by the wiring.
