1st gen needs a key

Hi All, I have a '86 4runner. I completely lost my only key. I have contacted the dealership and followed their instructions on checking the lock cylinder for a code. After doing this, their codes were not matching mine and they were unable to help me. Pop a lock said they would come make me one but this would cost me over $100 whereas with the dealership keys range from 8-25 dollars. Any one have any other ideas as to solving this issue?

Have you tried running the lock code # through Google? I did it with a tool box lock code and an eBay auction for a new key showed up. I paid something like $6.99 for two toolbox keys. If you PM me the code I'll look around. I live in VA but I won't steal your truck. Promise.

Hahaha I can attest to the flat head screwdriver. I can use anything flat, thin, and metal to start mine. Hence the hidden kill switch that not even my wife knows where it is.

The above thread might also help. Probably easier to replace all the lock cylinders and make sure you have spare keys.

From what I've heard, you could probably find someone with a '80s truck or 4Runner and make a copy of their key and have it work with yours.

buy a new lock cylinder, 18 and change from Rock Auto. Post the code on your passenger lock. Someone may have a key. Toyota should be able tout it off the code.our talking to the wrong dealer.

Try a old school lock smith that's what I use.

when i bought my truck it didn't come with a key (sketchy i know). all you have to do is pull the lock off the passenger door (pull the trim and its only held in by a small c-clip). there's a code on that lock (i believe its only on the passenger side one, none of the others) the dealer should be able to match the code, but i went through a mom-and-pop locksmith and they were able to match the code with the dealership for me. worst case scenario, they can make you a key manually for much cheaper if you bring it in to them vs having them come out to the truck.
