1st gen overheating, newly replaced cooling system parts

Hey guys. Hoping you could help me diagnose something. I just bought an 85 4runner and the owner had recently replaced the radiator, thermostat, water pump and fan clutch. Yet it still tries to overheat! The engine was rebuilt 40k miles ago so I hope it's not the head gasket. Could it be the thermostat? Or something? Thanks.

Check the coolant for oil, check the oil for coolant, do you have 22re of 3vz? You can also pull the spark plugs and see if theres any coolant in there.
 
You may want to flush your coolant lines. You could have a blockage somewhere. You can buy a kit that allows you to connect a garden hose to one of your lines. Run that through for a while and see if you get any junk out of it.
 
Yeah I was going to replace the coolant and check the lines too. The coolant is also boiling inside the radiator and over into the overflow which I just noticed so maybe radiator cap or faulty thermostat or something.
 
hehehe i have done this before........did you put the thermostat in the right direction?

if that isnt it i always remove the thermostat and then run it that way to test if it still has issues that would point to a head gasket.
 
You can test the thermostat too, with a cup of hot water and a multimeter, might as well do that too to completely rule it out.

as far as i remember the old boiling water trick was just to test if the thermostat opens or not and at what temperature that it does. a multimeter wont help you test a mechanical item.
 
Do you have a fan shroud? (not on my Toyota) I replaced everything as you did and still overheated. Went to the wrecking yard and added the stock fan shroud. No more overheating. They do more then you might think.

Okay, cool. I thought I'd seen a writeup where somebody used a meter to check resistance through the therm at different temps. If it's all mechanical I must be thinking of something else.
 
BUMP!

I have a question regarding the fan clutch. Ok first off every now and then I get a overheating problem. I've had this problem for quite some time now. I've changed the radiator, thermostat, and water pump. In the beginning i thought it was air bubbles but i know its not that. I even changed the distributor cap and rotar because someone suggested that might help. I've been researching all night and day and some folks said it could be the fan clutch. Heres where my question comes in. In some threads some say if you can spin the fan clutch by hand then its bad and you need to change it. Then in other threads they say it should move freely and if it doesn't move its seized lol. I have a 22re engine and my fan clutch moves FREELY, as freely as freely gets. Does this mean mines gone bad?

does it move freely when the engine is HOT?

I think the test is to roll up a magazine or newspaper, and try to stop the fan when the engine in running, and hot. if you can stop it, the clutch is bad.

also you should hear the fan spin up loud, if its not doing that, its bad...

Yea it moves freely when the engine is hot and starts up loud too. I was just confused because some people were saying that it shouldn't move even an inch when the engine is cold. That's what was causing my confusion.

It could, yeah. As your engine temp goes up the clutch is supposed to engage. If it isn't engaging when the motor is hot-hot, it's not working correctly. But the fan should spin on the clutch with a little resistance when it's cold.
 
I recently had some overheating issues. Replaced the thermostat but didn't seem to help. Had a leaky timing chain cover so while pulling that off i decided to go ahead and replace the water pump and the fan clutch. Haven't had any overheating issues since.

While i was removing the belt pulleys i did notice the belt driving the fan clutch seemed a little loose. Possibly that was contributing. The clutch looked old and crusty so i figured best to replace it anyway.

My new fan clutch doesn't move very much at all when the engine is cold. If yours is moving freely on a cold engine i would think that's a sign the clutch needs replaced.

Thanks guys, looks like that's been cleared up. Mine moves too freely for it to be ok and I am getting overheating issues every now and then so that might be the cause. I'm gonna be replacing this sometime this weekend.
