1st gen: Rear seat belt bolts

Hi guys! 1987 22re here, looking to find out what the rear lap belt bolt size is. It's not in the FSM and i cant find anything online, granted i didn't spend all day looking for it. The Runner didn't have belts when i bought it so i had to nab the bolts from the donor... but the bolts appear to be the wrong size

Anyways the 4 bolt holes that are for the lap belts in the rear, The bolts that are for the side retracting mechanisms, oddly, do not fit these 4 holes.

Any help would be appreciated. Just hoping that some guru out there happens to know. Thanks!

Well in case anyone was wondering, it is definitely NOT 7/16-20.

Your best bet is to go to a pick your part wrecking yard and take the bolts from a pickup or 4runner. They should fit no problem

there are numerous options at the junkyard. mid-90s subaru legacy hardware works, including the rear shoulder belts. corolla hardware works, too. etc.

You sure? It's gotta be some sort of SAE size, because I just checked mine and it's roughly an M12 but I couldn't thread any of my dies on it cleanly.

Yeah I have bought, tried, and returned about every bolt size at home depot and tractor supply, metric and standard, between M10X1.5 and M12X1.75. I guess it could be an M12x1.5... but nobody sells that. No idea whats going on with the bolts... i was just going to tap M12x1.75 and go with it. None of the stores around here loan a tap and die, and i dont want to spend $30 on tool that i need to use maybe once every 3 years. When i finally figure this crap out i will be sure and post it so that the next guy can just search :biggrin1:

I am currently swapping my non retractable belts for retractable ones. I have the retractable belts on the sides in place. I have not yet done the ones under the seat. It will be next weekend probably before I get back in there. I will pull a bolt and take it to Lowe's to test out. I need to go to Lowe's anyway.

I'm pretty sure they're a M12 fine thread. Hard to find. I got a couple pairs of these laying around. If you want to send me $5, I put them a set in the mail for you.

Thanks for the offer!! That makes sense, the M10x1.5 i tried seemed to match threads but it was way too narrow. Couldnt find an M12 fine thread around. i will keep you end mind if i cant locate a hardware store that has them

I took one of the bolts to Lowe's. I tested it on the bolt thread checker thing and it would screw in to the 7/16x20 easy. It would also screw in to two of the metric sizes but it didn't feel just right. So I am not much help because I didn't figure out exactly which it is. 7/16x20 doesn't make sense. It should be a metric thread. Lowe's didn't have any metric nuts to test on my bolt. They had empty bins where the nuts should be.

7/16-20 is apparently some sort of DOT standard for seat belt bolts.

I have a 1985 SR5 parts 4runner with the rear lap belts in it.

The seat belt bolts in both my 81 and 94 are both metric thread.
I bet if you put SAE in you will fubar the threads
