1st Generation Stereo Information

So I have been looking for the stock stereo for my 1985 4runner DLX Auto. I have not had much luck and looked for alternatives to my 8 wire set up. I found a radio that works well and uses the same 8 wire set up.

Cool thing is they seem pretty available and cover the "period" stock requirement. AM/FM Cassette. I know some of you add a better stereo but for those guys wanting a stock look and feel the radio stock number 08600-00836 works perfectly.

It is from the Tercel in the 87 range. It used the exact same 8 wires my truck has. My wires had been cut so I do not know if the plug was the same but I wired my cut wires to the plug in the radio and all is good in happy fun land :frog:

I will continue to search for a perfectly stock radio The stock number I came up with for my truck are:

86120- 17010
86120- 17051
86120- 17060
86120- 17061
86120- 32040

For the meantime though I am a happy camper :rofl:

It's dusty cuz I just snapped that pic two minutes ago, it'll clean up well. This is the original stereo from my current truck, the PO said it worked when he pulled it and gave it to me with the rig. I haven't hooked it up to know that for sure, and I don't have the knob.

Ha-ha, mine being a DLX version only had a single slot radio. Below the radio was a clock

For an '85 4 runner? The clock should have been in the dash to the right of the heater/AC controls (or a square knockout plate still attached to the heater control bezel), and there should have been a pocket below the stereo if it wasn't a double din unit. If there was no radio at all, that too would have been a knockout plate above the pocket.

The stock double DIN system wasn't a one piece unit [at least on my 84]. It had an AM/FM/cassette and a separate equalizer-amp that connected together.

Aient it some chit mang? It has to be stock it is all wired up just like you see it - and the guy told me he took it out and tried to find it for me. He said it had an AM/FM Cassette w/ digital buttons. He also said it had an antenna plug in but no plug for equalizer or amp etc...

Since there are 5 stereos for the year model, and I have a DLX, I guess it was a way to keep it cheaper with an automatic? I don't think they wanted to produce a DLX model that cost more then an SR5...

if it becomes to difficult or more money than you want to pay, you know you can fit other double din stock radios from other models.

2000 sr5 radio/tape/cd that was in my '88

I have that same stereo I got from a friend who had an 85 Pickup. Unfortunately that one does not use the Constant Power or Illumination wire.


Here is the stereo I found that actually looks alike a few I have seen in early 4 runners. It is now technically in Tercels a few years later. The important thing is that the stereo uses the 8 wire set up I got. I have the DLX and there are no rear speakers just front speakers.
