You are correct and that was the path I took to begin with, but there was a deep washout at the end of it that I couldn’t get past, so I backed up and went left with disastrous results.

FWIW, I commend you for your practicality. All the way back to when I got my first SUV in 2003, I knew that the huge majority of driving would be on the pavement so I got street tires. Today I have Michelin LTX AT2s and for me, they're an excellent blend of on- and off-road performance. I love a great trail but am not into mudding or rock crawling so they're perfect.

Luckily I had my lifted 4x4 pickup with MTs back when gas was cheap but I still learned how expensive those tires get for regular commuting. I would like something with a bit more grip but for now these are good highway tires and that’s 90% of my driving. If I retire this rig to weekend toy use and get an EV for commuting, then I’ll go whole hog overland build with it.

I’d like to get a set of steelies w MT’s. Stack them in the garage and swap them in when wheeling.
Until then, my KO’s have been a great all around tire.

It looks like you were able to open the drivers door and step onto dry ground, and then connect to the rear bumper while standing on dry ground. A self-recovery with a winch would have required you to go knee-deep in the muck. You do what you have to do, but I'd take a GMC pull rather than a swim in the mud.
