In for the ride on this one as well. Please lots of pics and details on the swap. I like that you can use the 4runner trans on this engine by just swapping bell housings.

If this goes correctly (it sure seems like it will with your knowledge) and you compile a precise list of what's absolutely necessary to knock out this swap, I will paypal you infinite dollars. I may never swap mine but this kind of information is invaluable. A DIY swap thread with a complete parts list, the mandatory, the optional, the helpful pointers, etc... would be a very special thing.

I like 4runners but holy crap! It's a crime that you pulled the heart out an immaculate SC400 to put it in a third gen.

That body for the SC400 is in immaculate shape. Someone else should be drooling over it.

Ever been repainted? My uncle's 94 SC400 looked great until the clear started peeling on him. He sold it for a IS-F, which he claims lacks the subtle refinement of the SC400. To each his own I guess.....

This is just my opinion from having worked on Toyota's back in the day, and seeing how they are constructed today.

I think the early 90's to about '95, was the pinnacle of Toyota build quality. Since then it seems to be on a steady decline. Which is another reason I haven't seriously wanted a newer 4Runner.

Well that's good to know...hehehe the money I mean... I would be more than happy to share any and all info and tips along the way. Heck, that's how I got most of the info I have now is from others doing this and that...for example,
TIP NUMBER ONE
"cutting the upper core support for easy install" this tip makes a huge difference as you may shove the motor in and out a few times before the final bolt in. simply mig weld the thing back in after your happy, it's good as new.
TIP NUMBER TWO
"Try to buy a complete donor car" I know this isn't always possible, but it will save you tons of money, and time sourcing all kinds of parts, fasteners, hoses, wiring, etc...etc...plus you can part the car for added funds...
TIP NUMBER THREE
"TOYOTA INFORMATION SERVICES" anyone can go online (you have to pay a 15.00 fee) but then you can download any information you need on any Toyota model for 48 hours...Wiring diagrams, connector locations, everything you will need to figure out the wiring swap. I'm in the process of doing pinouts on the connectors now. got the Lexus done, doing the 4runner now.

I'll put lots more tips as I go along...

Yea, I know... I really did labor that decision for quite a while...If it makes you feel any better, Lexi (that's the cars name btw) was not as immaculate as she looks, She hung her rear end out a little too far one day and mashed up her tail feathers pretty good, She got better, but her rear never looked quite as perfect again. Also, her plush grey leather interior was really showing her age, crows feet and liver spots and all... Her windscreen was cracked from top to bottom by a mean ole dump truck throwing rocks at her, Her antenna didn't go all the way up, and her instrument lights were either flickering or just burnt out. She had some issues for sure.

I will say though, She was the finest automobile I personally have ever owned... And I will truly miss her.

Wow...that's funny! I was just talking to another member about a V-8 swap he is thinking about doing. Drive on big guy! I think it's awesome...guys like you are starting to do these V-8 swaps. Personally I think this might end up being money better spent...than doing a supercharger!

Take lots of pictures for us...so we can drool all over them! Good luck on your build...

swap

Nice work so far man! Im currently thinking of the swap as well. Been reading on this for a while now. Only concern i have is wiring everything. Do you know if there is a harness thats being sold ( plug and play)? i dont wanna have to spend alot of time and headache dealing with cutting and all that wiring mess.
Ill be doing the 2uz-fe swap from the tundra or sequoia. I was planning for the sc400 that you are doing because of the all aluminum block but had been told that for more of a "bolt up" engine, do the 2uz from tundra. Honestly i gotta do more research and see what to do before buying an engine.
Ill be following this thread for sure. Cant wait to see this finished.

If you did an engine swap that would force me to buy all your supercharger goodies, and my wallet says no. So you shouldn't do that.

Yea but there is a big difference when doing a custom motor swap then slapping on a factory supercharger. One is 1000 times easier.

You won't get me to argue about that! But think in these numbers...you can find a good used SC for $1500-$2000...headers go for $600...URD 7th inj kit $1000...and something I just learned about, mod to valve body in the transmission. If you listen the Gadget this will cost $600 for the valve body and $1000 to rework your torque converter at Level 10, but most guys on here are running a Trans Go shift kit that runs only $100 and then labor to install.

So depending on how you want to do your build...you could spend anywhere from $3,700 to $5,200 on parts alone. But know this...you don't just slap on a supercharger!! You'll have hours and hours invested after you install your SC, headers, then your 7th injector kit, and last pull your transmission to rework your valve body and maybe torque converter. Oh yeah, then a number of hours to dial in your 7th injector to get the most out of your SC. That means you'll also need a couple new gauges and a laptop! All that money and time for an extra 50-75 RWHP!

Yes..SC is still easier to install than a V-8...but by the time you spend that much money and that many hours for only 75 RWHP...I'm really thinking a V-8 swap is in my future. Weather it's a Chevy LS or a Toyota V-8! I think Signtoe made money on his V-8 swap and did it in a couple of weeks!!

Good luck buddy

Thanks for the all the info!! LOL. I have built and tuned multiple turbo cars from 300-600whp. I know how it all works. If I did the charger it would be just the charger for a little more power up the hills. I would not go the full 7th injector route. Like you said its crazy expensive and I would rather do a turbo setup for that amount of cash because it would be so much more fun. I would never put all the work into supporting mods for a charger that is already maxed out pretty much out the box. I would also go larger injectors, not 7th and would run custom engine management. Im in the works of building an AWD, Auto trans, big turbo, 50 shot nitrous (for launching purposes) DSM. My last build was a small turbo 400+whp fast spooler for street purposes. Now that im older with family I want to keep it at the track. Car will be estimated 900whp. But this build is going to take me the next three years to finish. Still working with my buddys shop on the motor build. Its getting pricey. LOL.

Any build thread for this?

Hey now your talking...Turbo!! There's been a couple guys on here that have gone the turbo route...unfortunately I haven't read up on them yet. I do know you can get crazy power out of turbos though!!

Good luck on your build!!

Well Today was a great day, My Wife and I cruised into Bowling Green to pick up her Honda from the dealership with a fresh new paint job (done under warranty) and it looks like a brand new car...

When I got home from that, I got to work setting the engine trans combo in place for the final time...Here it is all bolted in...

Here is the clearance in the front using the oil pan parts from a 2UZ-fe...

TIP NUMBER FOUR
"most all parts from 1uz / 2uz are interchangeable"
This tip rocks because you have lots of options when planning a build.

oil pan fitment looks good. This is what ultimately determined exactly where the engine would sit...this position leaves even clearance all around, but it moves the transmission and every thing related to it back 3 inches and up 2 inches...
(you can read into this that you will need a 2 inch body lift)

Here is the passenger motor mount...
note the SC400 header and heat shield clearance.

drivers side

TIP NUMBER SEVEN
"have some shims or washers ready for the bottom two motor mount bolts into the engine block"
by using or not using shims here (between motor mounts and block) you can easily adjust the frame side of the mounts upward and outward, or downward and inward, thus adjusting perfectly how your motor sits in the bay...

Here is the modified steering joint, you can clearly see by comparing to the earlier pic of the spacer the improvement for exhaust clearance...
TIP NUMBER SIX
"you can use the lexus trans pan, but you will have to tweak the dipstick tube a little to get proper clearance from the front driveshaft" But man, look how tightly it snuggles up to that engine...

Here is the transfer shifter installed...
TIP NUMBER FIVE
"extend your trans shifter 2.5 to 3 inches forward for the right throw"

you can see here I only extended mine by 2 inches...I will have to trim the body just a little bit to get the proper clearance.
The 1UZ places the transmission about 2 inches higher than the 5ve...I thought, Heck yeah, that will make up for the length I lost with my body lift...I didn't take into account having to move the actual shifter hole aft to accommodate for the shifter before hand, so I'll have to trim it from the topside...
