2.25" or 2.5" muffler?

Before I get crucified, I've read a lot of posts about this, some of you are running a 2.25" muffler, others bought a 2.5". I'm looking to just replace my muffler, not the pipes. Seems odd to me that both sizes would be correct so help me out guys, which one is correct?

The rest of the exhaust looks good so I'd like to just replace the muffler if possible. Thanks.

Thanks jrm, that's what I thought. You guys that went with a 2.5", can you please chime in? I'm curious why you went that route and if you had any fitment issues.

Thanks.

I have a 2.5 because thats what the muffler shop told me I had. I just replaced my cat and muffler last week.

Stlfan, any chance you could also post a picture from the pipe exiting the muffler? Just curious, it looks like with 2.5" the used the muffler and cat as the OD as opposed to the ID. Pretty good idea actually.

Like I said in another thread, the 2.5 will slide right over the stock pipes and weld on just fine. I'm at work now, but I can post pics later. I think there's one in my build thread also.

Here you go. I hope this helps.

As already state, 2.25" is stock. I just had a 2.5" Borla welded up with no problems. Well, no problems due to the size difference that is.

This is the sound clip that convinced me to purchase the same Magnaflow. He includes the part # in the title

4Runner 18" Magnaflow - 11256.MOD - YouTube

I couldn't find my warranty card for the part numbers. The cat and muffler I got was a universal 2.5". The muffler was center in/ offset out. It flowed either way which is what made it universal. If someone wants the part numbers I can look around some more for the warranty card.

I have the 2.5" magnaflow. Paid a shop to install it (I don't have a welder) while I stood and watched.

He slid it right in over the other pipes, welded around, and it was done. 20 minutes.
