20/21 TPMS Issue

Looking for folks with real world experience on 20/21 TPMS sensors....

I took my ‘21 ORP to America’s tire to install new wheels and tires. I asked them to swap over the TPMS sensors from my stock wheels to the new wheels so I wouldn’t have to deal with recalibrating the sensors to the vehicle. Nothing ever goes as planned and of course the tech broke one of the sensors. They installed a dill 7003 TPMS sensor in place of the OE Toyota one. I figured I needed the car to try and pickup the new aftermarket sensor and used the TPWS ‘change wheel’ setting then drive for over 30 minutes above 25mph as outlined in the manual. No luck and the TPMS light is still on.

America’s tire ordered me a new OE Toyota TPMS sensor and they will be installing it this weekend. Does anyone know if I need a scanner/tool to register the new TPMS to the vehicle or can it simply ‘relearn’ by the ‘change wheel’ setting? I know typically they have a tpms calibration tool which can read all four sensors then register it to your ECU/Vin. Unfortunately their tool software is not up to date for 2021 models yet.

Tell them to use 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser to work with your vehicle. Same sensors. This is what I did when I installed aftermarket sensors on my 2020. No problem.

Appreciate the response! When you had the shop use the 19 land cruiser in their scanner they were able to register the sensor to your ECU and read your VIN?

I did it myself with my Autel scanner. I duplicated my original sensors. To do it you can read the ECU directly using the OBD2 port or scan each working sensors. In your case with a broken sensor they need to connect the scanner to the ECU. That said, my understanding is that the vehicle will recognize any proper activated sensor.

I now wish i had just bought aftermarket sensors and cloned my original ones!

The tire shop actually tried to connect directly into my OBD - the issue was that their scanning tool did not read my ECU. He mentioned its because their software is not up to date for 2021 models and I believe he tried to read it as a 2020 model as well with no luck.

I'm hoping once they install the OE toyota TPMS my rig will be able to just detect it.

Yes if they have the old one which broke they could read it and transfer that data to the new OEM one certainly, the vehicle should not see an issue unless they have already assigned a replacement to that position. But you said they couldn't because the tool wasn't updated yet so likely that is all that is necessary (program the new one and install).

I'm thinking about buying one of those Autel Units myself just to save time during seasonal changes (have aftermarket TPMS units on another set of OEM wheels and have to go to the tire shop seasonally to have the ECU re-learn the next set of sensors).

for 20/21 runners you need to buy 42607-48010 part numbers. for programming them, it can be done through the menu inside your main cluster. go under TPMS setting there is an option to program.... once you do that you need to drive in a particular pattern. 4R will reciter the new sensors successfully. my input is based on my experience with the winter tires on my 2020 TRD OffRoad.

i also have a 2019 TRD pro and a 2010 Limited, TPMS system in 2019 and older model is different.... where you actually need to program the new values. I bought a tool to do this (about $100) that I use every time I do the tire change - winter to summer and back.

I than scanned the old sensors and used those id numbers on the new sensors. I had to manually enter them into the trucks ecm using a brand new snap on scanner {i am a auto tech and our shop has a new scan tool updated to 2020}. The tire pressure warning light went right off when i was done and the truck started showing tire pressures after a few miles of driving. Now i have 8 tires and wheels mounted with only 4 id numbers. This should make it easier to swap them out in the spring. Hope this helps.

Last winter I bought an Autel scanner with sensors in a kit. I just duplicated each original Toyota sensors in one single operation. Very easy, no need to connect anything to the ECU, no warning lights. Just scan the originals and activate the new ones as prompted on the scanner's screen. It's my second Winter and everything is fine. The trick as gr8filed said is to reuse the original id numbers. Maybe not the only way to do it, but it's an easy one that works.

I got the one OE sensor installed this morning and after 20-30 minutes of driving my car relearned the sensor and the TPMS light is gone. I did have to put the car into ‘change wheel’ under the TPWS in vehicle configuration. Hope this helps anyone moving forward!

I have been having TPMS issues in my 2020, after I switched tires on my trd pro wheels the sensors were all reading but in the wrong positions. After doing the relearn in the settings menu, it does not display the pressure in the menu, after a long time trying different things it will give a tpms malfunction warning. I've tried the "change wheel" option in the menu, it registered the sensors again but again it wont display pressures and the same malfunction warning will come on after a while. Ive tried everything in the manual.

I'm quite frustrated by this, It looks like I will be taking it to the dealership.
