20 inch wheels on LIMITED

So I decided to ask General Tire directly about the change in recommended wheel widths for the 275/55R20 size for the Grabber UHP. They basically responded saying that the 7" recommendation was a typo.

They also included in the response that proper inflation will likely cause premature center wear and that under-inflation to balance the wear is a safety risk. Needless to say, I have contacted them back on this as those don't seem to be acceptable outcomes for a tire I was led to believe would actually fit.

The kicker is that the final 2 tires at this size that appear to be listed for a 7" wheel width (Grabber HTS and Continental CrossContact LX) are both under the Continental brand. This likely means that those being listed as compatible with 7" wheels is also inaccurate, which would leave 0 options in the 275/55 range for the OEM wheel...

So, after a bit of back and forth, General Tire decided to do a good will reimbursement at full price I paid for the UHP tires since they are not recommended for the 7" wheels I have. They initially said I could pick out any General Tire set of tires for the vehicle and they'd do that exchange no problem. However, they told me they don't make a tire for the 7" wheels. They told me they based their ratings on ETRTO standards, which ultimately means that the 275/55 tire is not suitable for the 7" wheel width.

I'm still assuming in all of this that they are also acknowledging the typo applies to the HTS and the Continental tire as well (which would mean that there are no 275/55R20 tires suitable for the Limited 7" wheels).

I took this opportunity (full refund) to go with a set of Firestone Destination AT 275/70R17.... on a set of Countersteer Type X wheels.... I'll have the 20's up for sale at some point when I can clean them.

I have 73,105 on my current set of 275's. Still not under tread specs for needing new. Though, probably another 5-7K and I will get the same again. Extremely impressed and just in the last 8K or so started to hear them getting louder. I do have appropriate wheels as noted in my signature.

I opted to dump the wagon wheel skinny 20's and picked up the Gen 4 Limited wheels. Brand spanking new for about $160 per wheel.

I got them at ToyotaParts4Less.com which is actually Airport Toyota located in Vandalia, Ohio. They have them listed on eBay as well but they will give you a better price if you go through their website to order. I looked around and they were cheaper than anyone else.

Have you figured out where you can see images of the wheels? They list them with things like "Type UD", but which wheel is that?

A new alloy wheel for $160 is an incredible price for factory alloys. I've paid more than that used.

They only made one version of the 18x7.5 wheel so simply look for the wheel that is 18". Then get the center caps that are also are listed for the 18" wheel.

Final Choice of wheels and tires for my black 2012 Limited

I have read and re-read everyones opinion on which tire to go with on a stock 20in wheel. I seriously thought about placing the larger non-recommended tires on my 20in OEM wheels but chickened out.

I ended up replacing my 20in OEM wheels for 18in Worx wheels with AT destination tires....275/65/18 on a non lifted Limited. Does it rub? No, but have to admit it's mighty close. I might have to eventually heat treat and remold but for now no problems on reverse, forward turning, etc... And yes, I think they look incredible!! Thanks everyone for all the help with this. By all of your posts I was able to make a logical decision for what suited me best.

What offset did you get on those Tyrant, 12 or -12 ??

Thanks!! and Yes... the ride is so much better/softer. Not so harsh when you hit a speed bump or any bump. Noise level about the same. Gas is about 2mpg less but worth it!

Well... Went to Discount Tire today intent on ordering some DuraTracs in 275/55-20. They informed me they would not install them given the size is not recommended for the 7" wheel. Given it is the wife's ride I went home and discussed different wheel options with her.mmShe decided she liked the Method Standards so I went back and ordered a set of those in 17" along with a set of 265/70-17 DuraTracs. Wish I could have kept the stock wheels but really wanted the DuraTracs for their winter performance. They go on next Saturday and I will have to admit I will be jealous of the wheels on her 4Runner. Now wish I would have gone with the Method's on my FJ...
