2000 4Runner 65k miles - should I grab it?

Hey guys,

First post. I just went to test drive a 2000 SR5 4Runner. It was in pretty good condition. The 3.4 V6 felt very good and I was surprised I got up to 80kms so quickly. The interior is cloth, but it's in good shape.

The truck has very low kms. It's 109,000 kms or around 65,000 miles. I'm going to get a mechanic to look things over before I buy it. The guy is asking 8000$, but he even told me that he's willing to deal.

I'm from Victoria, Canada and, around here, a 4Runner with 240,000 kms can go for $12,000 :ybrick:.

So what do you guys think? Is there anything I should be looking out for? I'll be spending the rest of my night lurking these forums for more information, but anything you guys can give me would be great :).

well, like I said, it is just my opinion.

leather gets REALLY hot in the summer, and turns into a block of ice in the winter. At least that's how it feels on bare skin.
Hot leather sticks to me and makes my back all sweaty. Leather cracks and fades.

Cloth breathes, and I personally just like the feel of it better.

You've obviously never been to a New Mexico winter..

and since when do you have to be completely nekked to feel anything on your skin? haha

Is it a 4wd? Seems like a really good deal.

And I too prefer cloth to leather. I think it wears a lot better and holds up to sharp objects better (something that is constantly getting tossed in and out of my rig). Plus I like the look and feel of it better in these rigs.
 
I already got the Carfax. It basically said I don't have anything to worry about because nothing was reported to it. I'm still going to get a mechanic to check it out, since the owner told me that the truck has been in a small accident before.

And ya, it's 4x4 too. I tried it out :P. Honestly, my last truck had cloth seats and it got pretty stained. When I went hunting/hiking, I'd trek a lot of mud back into the truck. I'll probably invest in some nice leather/vinyl seat covers!

Damn I'm excited again lol.
 
It seems WAY too cheap to me. I looked throughout all of Alberta and B.C. before recently buying my current 4Runner. I got mine for $6700 with 245 000kms on the clock. Its in fairly good shape but definetly not perfect. Check the underside for rust as I found after looking at over a dozen 4Runners, the frames (especially the rear-end and back towards the hitch) were rotten.

DONT get a Carfax report. Carfax is used in the United States and does not include details of the majority of claims made in Canada. I made that mistake once before. I bought a vehicle after checking the Carfax report in Canada. When I went to sell it a while later someone ran a "CarProof" report (which is the correct report to order, in Canada) and found out that the vehicle had been in a $30 000 dollar accident one year after it was originally sold. And the CarFax report came up perfectly clean.

My .02 is that it is too cheap for the miles. BUt you never know.... thorough mechanical/structural integrity inspection and run the full CARPROOF report.

So it seems everything on CarProof also checked out. I wish I didn't have to spend 100$ on 2 reports, but I guess it's a good peace of mind.

I think I'll offer him $6800. He's got it online for $8000, but he told me right off the bat that he's open to offers and wants the truck sold.

What do you guys think?

The advice you'll usually see on this forum is, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But this price doesn't sound so outrageous to make me think you should run away. Especially if the carfax, car proof, and mechanic all say it's good.

Also, if you're worried about spills, stains, tears, cold leather on your bare @$$, just use the money you saved by getting a good deal on the truck, and make your first mod some wet okoles.
 
I agree if everything checks out on it go for it. Speaking from someone who has continually gotten beat out of deals on trucks by trying to be extra extra careful/thorough, if it checks out, runs well, looks well, etc. etc. and you feel good about it...then jump on it before someone else does! Good luck!
 
I haven't had a chance to get it checked out yet. I test-drove it yesterday. It drove well from what I could tell (that doesn't mean much haha).

CarProof/CarFax both cleared. I just need to set up that mechanic.
 
Wow, that's low mileage for a 2000. Mine had 139K+ on it when I bought it. Traded my sports car in on it (I wanted a 4Runner again so bad, I don't miss the car). I wonder if the previous owner had another vehicle they drove and only the 4Runner when the weather was bad? Anyway, good luck with your decision.
