This, many people don't seem to understand rubber/plastics and other items still degrade over time and not using the machine can accelerate and cause issues, especially when stored for long periods with fluids. It will be interesting to see how this vehicles (3rd gen 4runners) are valued at the 30yr mark, if they start showing up in high end car auctions, and if full restoration units could being in $ to make the work worth the time and cost.

To a point, but a lot of rubber and vinyl oxidation is caused by heat when the engine runs. The fluid systems can def be an issue, but my '85 with around 30k original could almost pass for showroom when I clean it up under the hood. The low miles premium is worth a lot to me personally when it comes to auto transmissions, since most people ignore that fluid, and most of the rest of the powertrain to a lesser degree - valves, bores, driveshaft u joints, etc, and suspension like ball joints, etc. But not this kind of premium.

Pretty funny that the guy modded it and is trying to sell for double. Rule of thumb has always been to mod for enjoyment but don't even count on making back what you put into it, let alone a profit. Maybe that's changing in these crazy times too, or maybe he's new at sales.

Depends on your paint color! Toyota made hoods with scoops for most colors - but not all. Good quality used hoods can be found under $400.

There's some aftermarket hoods to be had in the $300 range plus another $100 for the Toyota bits to put in the hood scoop. Then whatever you local shop will charge to paint match and blend with the fenders. I had it in my head to do this a few years back until it would cost about $700 all said and done for my Desert Dune 4Runner. No thank you.

I love how this thing actually got worse! Cheap ass radiator clamps(if he put Breeze constant tension clamp, I would understand. This is the worm gear shit). Craigslist special 5th gen wheels("$400 OBO, upgraded to TRD Pro wheels"). Generic Costco roof rack(I can't even sleep on the roof of my 50k overlander?!). He wants double the money for THIS? I tend to justify the high asking price of low mileage 3rd gens, but this seller is a dumbass.

We loved out 3rd gen, but the 5th gen is better.

The "Murican Embiggenning" that hit every Yota in 2005, is the start of everything that isn't good about Toyota.

Of course, I don't like full sized trucks either. I love the "car" scale of the 3rd gens. The ability to reach the glovebox without having to undo your seatbelt, etc. Easier parking in tight spots too, as well as better width clearance for offroading.

My '05 Taco was also the worst Toyota ownership experience I ever had. Less than 100K on it. Bumpers rotted through, gas tank straps rotted through causing my driveshaft to wear a hole through the gas tank, frame had rot holes, and, it was just f*cking huuuge. If I wanted a pre-*EVEN YET STILL BIGGER F150*, I now had it. I wanted a Toyota pickup, not a flippin' land yacht.

Tack on my 2014 VW (worst vehicle EVER) with so much electronic bullsh*t added on to make more things fail, and my general hunch is that a Gen 5 is great for folks who lease for 3 years and dump before the problems start, or the folks with more money than sense, who have lots of support so when their vehicle is on the shop for yet another dead wiring harness, fried sensor, rotted plastic connector that the clips busted on and caused improper function. I like driving them, not dealing with non warranty, electronic doo dad repairs every 6 months.

Gen 3's really exemplified the end of the era when vehicles would easily go 250, 300K with only reasonable care.

Now, despite all the flashy BS, Toyota's won't go that many miles without CRAZY, stupid crap breaking, unless you just pile them on in the first 5 years.
