anyone have a wiring diagram for a 2000 4runner headlight system?
my headlights are acting up, turn on with switch nothing happens but when I flash my high beams the highs come on and when I release the high beam the lows come on. but sometimes after I do that the lows click off. sounds like a relay click under my glove box area.

I put my mm to the harness and no voltage until I click the high beams then i get 12 volts to the low beams. im not sure where to start so im thinking maybe the switch on my steering wheel?

2000, so WITH DRL's, right?

Switch, or maybe dimmer relay. Did you check all four fuses? I'd need to poke around more before I nailed it down.

yup with drl. I see the drl plug but no black unit next to the battery. I also do not remember seeing the drl box under my dash. Gonna have a look tomorrow.

2002 is the only diagram I have. I know there are some differences in the DRL part for 2000. That's the best I can do for you.

The dimmer relay switches between the highs and lows based on a signal from the stalk. It's in the main engine room fuse/relay box. I can confirm the 2000 has one.

the dimmer relay, I was looking on my napa website and cant find a replacement relay. all that comes up is the whole switch unit that goes on the steering column.

also I noticed when the truck is off the lows stay on. as soon as I fire up the truck the lows will kick off. last night I clicked them on and started driving and they stayed on. im thinking I have a bad ground somewhere

Try this just for fun. Headlights OFF, Ignition OFF, e-brake OFF. Start engine. Pull e-brake on. This should disable DRL system. Then see how the headlights respond to stalk control Hi and Lo.

Trying to isolate if issue on DRL side (not coming in or out when it should) or on headlight side.

I just got to work its 1:50pm hawaii time. did this, I still need to pull back my switch to get the low beams on. But the low beams do stay on now with the truck running. usually they dont work on the first try. hasnt happend on the first try since I got the truck lol

so it works if I do the e brake technique. also I found the box under my dash cut the black wire yellow stripe but still gotta click the highs to get the lows on.

my harness to the bulb looks bad so I'm going to buy new ones from napa. I was wondering if it was possible to wire one of the wires coming off the harness directly to a ground, or would that not make a difference? still trying to figure this crap out

Hmmm, you did check the 7.5 Amp DRL fuse? Even if you did, humor me and swap in a fresh one--even with it disabled, you need power here to leave DRL out of the circuit.

On the ground thing, you could, and it won't hurt, but since lights won't work at all without ground, I'd be surprised if it made any difference.

I removed the 7.5 drl fuse n the lights didnt work at all. I will try again in about 10 mins see what happens n ill report back

so I just replaced the fuse. still gotta flick the highs to get the lows to come on. as far as the harness goes with the headlights off (switch off) what should my readings be with my multimeter

You should have 0 volts to ground on both filaments and the common should be infinity to ground (not sure on this last). What I would like to know now is: when you are hoping for low beams but not getting them--do you not have ground at the common or not have 12V+ at the hot side of low filament? It could be either one. It would also be really helpful to have volt readings to ground from all 4 terminals of the dimmer relay.

We are a little hamstrung by not having a year-specific diagram, but I think we can find it with a little luck and persistence. We also don't have the internal wiring of the main relay or a real understanding of the effects of the DRL disable you did. But if we focus on tracing back the low-beam circuit in its fault state, we can probably find the problem.

ok so I cut that black wire yellow stripe going to the box under the dash thinking itll be like all the other drl disable threads, but nope. got in the truck and the lows wouldnt stay on. they kept kicking off. good thing I keep my tools woth me at all times and had my butt connectors. reconnected the wires and drove it home.

gonna run my mm to the harness today. also going to rip apart my dash and see if I can find any suspicious wire connections

this is officially driving me insane. so with the truck on light switch off I should have voltage to the 7.5 drl fuse?

See it these help you out. When I get a chance, I'll check them over to see if I can find an area to specifically check.

When my fiance and I move back to her home on Oahu, I expect a beer. :D

im not the best at reading these diagrams but thjs does help...and yes wheb ur back on oahu we'll grab some beers for sure

Nope, only when the headlight relay is energized (stalk switch ON or pull up to FLASH.)

ok gonna check this a little later, fkn raining dammit. also I noticed this yesterday while I had my dash apart looking for anything unusual, I had the headlights working per ebrake method u gave me, and I pushed the headlight switch forward to active the high beams, and nothing happened. the highs only come on when I pull the switch towards me, if I push them with the lights on nothing happens

If you unplug the DRL resistor behind the battery and try to work the headlamps; what happens? I unplugged my DRL resistor to just have a normal headlamp system because I was blowing bulbs every six months. (it's been a year and a half and I haven't blown a bulb since.) The system will continue to operate just like a 4Runner w/o DRL's with this unplugged. It may help you in diagnosing the problem to take that variable out of the system.
