2000 4runner overheating?

If they smelled coolant that would be a normal smell coming from the radiator or radiator reservoir since that's where coolant goes! If they mean they smell coolant from the tail pipe that would mean a blown head gasket. I would be very surprised if your head gasket was blown though. Watch your coolant level and if it goes down and you can't find any leaks, you could have a blown head gasket. Look for a milky color in your oil and look for white smoke coming out of the tail pipe. Track your gas mileage also for a couple of tanks and see if you're getting at least 16-17 mpg. I usually get almost 19 but at times get as low as 16. If you can, you should flush your cooling system. I had overheating issues when I first got my 4Runner and it ended up being the radiator. I tried flushing it which helped temporarily but after a while the radiator clogged up again. My guess is the previous owners never ever flushed it when they were supposed to.

I've got a 99 sr5 4wd and I am getting the code po171 (system too lean). There are no leaks from what I can tell. If I am getting ready to drive across the country should I replace the mass airflow sensor to keep the engine from overheating?

Soo are you over heating as of right now? Also i would clean your maf and clear you code before going out and buying a new maf.
