2000 4Runner Swapping 3.4L for a 4.0L !Photos Added!

So many of you may be asking yourself and eventually me whats the point... Well here it is: I used to own a 2000 tacoma which i had my off-road fun with but last July i decided i wanted a bigger back seat so i bought a 2000 4Runner sr5 with 92k miles and i was happy...for about a month. I then realized that whoever owned it before me was an idiot and never took care of the thing. I had my tacoma from 62k miles to 190k miles and all i ever had to do was maintenance on it. I hit 94k miles and the thing literally began to fall apart. so i have recently decided to spend and extra $3000 - $4000 more and buy myself a better 4runner.....but then i got to thinking, why not spend 3k-4k more on rebuilding it, maybe replace the motor and tranny, then exhaust and fuel systems while im at it. So spend 4k more on another 4runner in better mechanical condition or spend 4k more on my 4runner and get it into better mechanical and performing condition and with all the ideas that i have and Toyota whispering about a new supercharger for the 1grfe... I could quite possibly create a 4Runner with over 350bhp.

I have already bought the motor and tranny from japan, it should be arriving here in a couple of weeks and I will keep all of you posted with pictures, problems, tips and tricks and if any of you know of anything I should look out for or if you know of anyone else who has done this already I'd greatly appreciate you letting me know. Thanks a lot and wish me luck.

My only suggestion is a company here in Denver called Off Road Solutions. They do a number of engine swaps in Yotas.

Not sure if they have done this one or not but they are real helpful.

well one day as i was getting into my runner i stepped on the running board and the whole thing just fell off. i honestly cant tell you why that happened, i never figured it out. then the main line to my A/C compressor came off and blew freeon all over my engine bay, which i found out was because someone replaced the A/C with one that had the wrong clutch pack for a 4runner. and because of that this one was a doosy... at about 99k miles one of my spark plugs crapped out so i replaced all 6 of em, i go to turn the car on to make sure everything was working ok and the fan blade pretty much just flies out from the engine bay, fan and clutch together. i am actually currently installing and electric fan from a ford taurus in my little black beauty right now because i just destroyed another fan blade while i was rally racing the other day. oh and then my alternator belt snapped, my abs system went haywire and then one day it wouldnt start cause i found out that someone hired an ape to put a remote start in. honestly i could probably write a 4 page essay on the crap that's gone wrong on my runner.

I decided that instead of spending $3000 more on another runner, that spending $3000 more on rebuilding it and making it that fastest f*cking 4Runner on the planet. Cause the way i see it is that if i got another runner it may run better but its still gonna be bone stock, so actually rebuilding it and even throwing in a newer, faster and more powerful motor in the long run will be more cost effective and actually cheaper

I guess the engine is about the biggest problem you could have and your about to fix that. Tranny would be second I guess.

well this first overhaul will be: motor, 5spd auto transmition, full dual exhaust from Jardine, high velocity drive shaft, k&n cold air intake, rebuild front suspension (replace bushings and bearings) and i am actually currently installing an electric fan from a ford taurus. Then when trd comes out with the new supercharger for the 4.0 i will install that and hope that urd comes out with a 7th injector kit for it, and then probably put in a new rear axle with posi-traction and then replace all of the fuel components (pump, filter injectors, ect.) and then I don't know. Probably something else rediculous. This is all going to happen over a span of about 2-3 years. Not to mention how long its gonna take to dial all of this in. By the time im done with this thing I want to run a 10sec. 1/4 mile. I have some sort of undying fascination with 4Runners and Tacomas. My old taco had a supercharger, exhaust and a solid front axle swap so I got all of my off roading needs out. But when I bought my 4Runner I just wanted a comfortable and relaxing vehicle, but I just cant leave my cars alone. I always get rediculous ideas and it all goes down hill from there. I guess the reason Im doing this is because if you wanna go fast, you buy a fast car, but its all the same...they're all cars. And every time a manufacturer makes a quick truck or suv it always turns out like sh*t. So Im taking it upon myself to make an suv that can smoke a modern day sports car on pavement then go off roading the next day.

Me too. I know the 2nd gen. members swapped the 3.0 for the 3rd gen. 3.4, I guess it is only natural to try and put a 4.0 in a 3rd gen. I wonder if this thing will work, anyway please post your progress along with pics.

I have decided to make this a sticky in the 3rd gen. forum for awhile so members can come and check this thread from time to time.

I dont rally race proffesionaly but i take it up into the twisty dirt roads in the mountains and drive the thing as fast as i can.

I am looking to start a project and I was thinking about getting an extended cab 2005ish Tacoma and doing a SAS with 37s. Hopefully I can find one cheap with a ton of miles because I want to put a 4.7 in it from a newer Tundra. A lot of work I know but it will be sweet when I am done. I think the easiest way for you to do the swap is to find a wrecked Tacoma or something else with the 4.0, that way you have all the parts you need to make it work. I know from other people doing swaps like this it takes a lot of knowledge with electronics to make all the gauages work. Good luck!
