2000 Celica GT-S

Please tell me you're not interested in a Yaris anymore. I wouldn't let my sons drive one of those deathtraps. What about a 96-04 Tacoma? Single cab, 4-banger, 5-spd., 2wd? My boy is looking at these. They're cheap and plentiful since Toyota made a s-load of these.

I kind of think Chuckles used his "interest" in the Yaris to get him something that gets bad gas mileage. :llama:

The fixerupper has been fun sofar. A few frustrations though. The locals around here think their clapped out POS is made of platinum. It took a while for me to get Chuckles a 4runner because of it. It's unreal what prices are for used Toyotas. Way over bluebook is very common. :frusty:

I drove the Celica to work for the first time in a long time last week. It was so fun! I really miss her. :tea:

Finally made a cabin air filter today. The weird thing is that in the Celica, there is a tray for one, no filter from the factory, and nothing in the owner's manual about one. In my mom's 2008 Scion xD, there is no tray, but there is a thing in the owner's manual for one in South American models.

Well, the Celica got it's first salt exposure in 10+ years We went skiing up in Paoli, Indiana and it snowed up through Kentucky. It handled it great! There was 3-ish" of snow on the sides of the interstate. We washed it really good today. Got the body, undercarriage, and engine.







We also got great gas mileage- 32



Also, there has been a dead spot in the rev range around 5-6,000 RPMs. We think it's due to the thermostat sticking and not letting the engine get warm enough. Our entire drive home (3-4 hrs) was below normal operating temperature.

Thermostat fixed the warming up problem. The hesitation is still there. Maybe I'll clean the MAF sensor.

Major tune up!

I cleaned the MAF, PCV Valve, and K&N. The MAF was nasty! Black turned to silver. The filter was pretty dirty on the bottom (couldn't see it from the top, so I thought it was good before). PCV valve is a metal one and I cleaned it out good along with the hose. I will be changing the oil sometime (it has 2,300 miles and 6 months on it).


Best thing It drives like new again!!!!! :car::driving:


For my dad's upcoming birthday, I will be clay bar-ing it and waxing it real well.

have you change the lift bolts yet? i havent really read through your whole thread but i know it is a common occurrence that the lifts bolts will go out causing you not to really lift left in the lower gears.

The lift bolts failed a few years back. We had them replaced my our mechanic friend. It sucks how the labor cost 10x as much as the parts...

I drove it today and it was lifting fine in 2nd gear.

Wow, I haven't posted in this thread in over a year! Haven't done much except drive it and change the oil.

My dad changed the transmission oil with some Redline MT-90 and it stopped grinding in 2nd gear!



We're planning on doing some maintenance here soon-

1. Change engine oil

2. Replace lift bolts just to be safe

3. Valve cover gasket- not leaking, but have to take it off to do the lift bolts

4. Oil pan gasket- has a slight leak

5. Spark plugs

6. Tires- needs them before winter. Not sure what to get yet.

I'm probably forgetting something, but that's all I can remember for now


Oh, and we might be plastidipping the wheels to see how they look

The last generation Celicas are becoming more and more rare, especially a GT-S in decent shape. So I didn't read through this entire thread, did see that you had the lift bolts replaced which is good. Toyota later resolved this issue with a redesigned lift bolt material. Also read you are running Redline MT 90 in trans. Have been using MT 90 for about ten years, your C 60 transmission will retain longevity and operate smoother with this oil.
I see you have a aftermarket short ram type intake, the design and operation of the 2-zz is is partial to a short ram vs a longer tube intake "type cold air" that has tubing running to the front inner fender. This engine also responds very well to a larger, low restriction exhaust . I think 2 1/2" is recommended , I'm running 2 1/4" from the cat back with a modified TRD muffler and a custom made center pipe with resonator, all stainless .
So what do you think of the 2-zz GE motor ? It's quite a powerhouse of a motor, for a 1.8L it screams pretty hard.

We probably have one of the nicest 7th gen Celicas left to be honest. If it weren't for the rear quarter panel dent, it would be perfect. I really like the sound of the stock exhaust- it get's louder every year lol. I think it has plenty of power in it's stock form like we have. The only bad thing with ours is a flat spot in the power band just before the lift engages. After trying to figure it out for the longest time, it goes back to full power if we buy 100% gas without that ethanol crap.

Overall, it's a sweet little car!

It's on my list for when I'll have the space and the money to get another fun car. Can't justify it now, since I have the T4R for the WE and the XC90 as a DD.

MAF sensor was dirty. On this and my 2004 4Runner. I did not realize you need to clean the inside too. Celica also got a new upstream O2 sensor. Runs like new again!!!
