2000 T4R rear fender flare question

Hi all,

This is my first post. I'm the proud owner of a (new to me) 2000 SR5. I have removed the side running boards. But now I don't like the look of the rear mudguard. It's too long compared to the perceived clearance between the wheels. It looks like this right now:

Notice the black strip underneath the rear mudguard/fender flare? I'd rather not have that. Except..the whole thing is a one-piece deal. Here's what I would prefer the rear mudguard to look like:

Any ideas?

Just cut it off. I used a cut off wheel but you can use scissors or a dremel. It's pretty easy and looks a lot cleaner with them off.
