2000 Toyota SR5 $ runner tranny problems

Get a drain pan and just drain the trans fluid. Check for particles. No mechanic friend needed.

Gentlemen, I am happy to report that the 4 runner is working! Friend dropped the pan and there was a lot of sediment on the bottom and especially the filter. Cleaned out the pan, new transmission fluid and filter. Initially there was an issue with the gear not engaging in first from a stop, while all other gears were perfect. He reset the sensor ( or something) and now all gears work better than before. In a month I was advised to change the fluid and filter again to make sure all the remaining junk is gone. The problem seemed to be a really clogged filter. He thought it might have been additives or something. He just knew it was unusual. Thanks to all who assisted, especially WillHickey foor suggesting the filter.:thanks::thanks:

That's not really a filter per se. It's a screen. If it was clogged, you've lost a lot of clutch material.

By no means do I believe this is a fix as much as it is a band-aid. At least I can drive the vehicle to a shop. It feels like its running strong but from what little I know its only a matter of time and from my friend said it was most likely clutch material as well.

Don't throw away cash bud on a trans yet wait Til it quits totally if its shifting good then no solenoid are clogged and the torque converter pump etc is still good . Alot of clutch material is okay if it didn't clog right back up ... What did the fluid look like ? We have to figure out what caused it

Sorry havent got back to explain situation further. Been crazy schedule. Willhickey, fluid was a little dark but it certainly wasnt milky. Friend thought it might be some coating or paint on the pan that seperated. I know that doesnt make sense. He didnt believe it was clutch material although it didnt seem like it could really be anything else. Suggested I run it and get filter/fluid replaced so more of the gunk cant work its way through the system and also to get the system flushed. I agree I need to figure it out. He went over the vehicle to try to see if it was something simple I missed (i.e. transfer case lever getting bumped). Anyways I will let yuo know if something develops. All I know is its working.

Also wanted to say my neighbor apprasises vehicles for a living. Has done lots of toyotas and he was baffled as well.
