2001 4Runner brake upgrade to Tundra

Been lurking, but don't post but now could use some help. Have a 2001 4R SR5 that came original with 15" front brakes. Tired of the warpeage and constant brake attention. I have a set of 17" J Cruiser factory wheels on it. Been scrounging around the board on the Tundra upgrade and it looks like that's what I might do. I'm guessing the 17" wheels shouldn't pose a problem, tho I do see on an OFF-ROAD article they have you shave down the back of the wheel.

Anyone see a problem with doing this swap using the 17" wheels? I'm assuming the stock brake lines will connect just fine. I'm going to order parts for a 2006 Tundra, which is the end of the 1st Gen line. Any good parts lists? What not to order or what didn't work?

Thanks in advance for help. Will get some pictures of my Runner and avatar set up. It's an untouched stock 4Runner in very good shape except the brakes and wobbly sponge suspension (next project).

You'll just have to try out the new hardware on the 17" wheels you have. The trimming required you mentioned is only for the 16" wheel and then only the ones in the picture to the article you attached, not all wheels. Otherwise should be pretty straight forward. Luck. :cowboy:

Since you have a 15" wheel truck, you'll want to upgrade the rear wheel cylinders at the same time. The smaller wheel trucks have smaller front discs and calipers, and smaller diameter rear wheel cylinders (the drums and shoes are the same though). That will keep the brake bias closer to original.

And the brake discs aren't warping... the pad material is getting unevenly deposited on the rotors. Good pads, correct bedding and careful driving can reduce or eliminate it. (my 15" wheel brakes don't have any pulsation, even with 265/70-17 tires - they are just woefully underpowered!)

Either way, the Tundra brake upgrade should help.

I had to cut the dust shield a little when i did mine and sanded the face of the caliper a little rather than the back side of the rims....
