2001 4Runner P0500

I am sure there are similar previous postings........

I have a 2001 4Runner with a MIL On (check engine) and a trouble Code of P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor. I have an old scanner.

Also, the ABS, Brake, VSC Off and VSC Trac lights are all on. The ECU-Ig fuse is blown. The shift is locking. At first the rear window and wipers were working intermittantly now they are not working and the windows and moon roof won't work. When I replace the ECU-Ig fuse, a lot of things cleared but it blows again.

Assuming this is not referring to the speed sensor on the transmission, an abs relay or some aspect of the ecu, that it is really a bad abs speed sensor .....are there scanners that will show you which one. I have crawled under to look at the sensor locations. Where they screw in looks easy enough but the connectors seem like they are tucked up pretty high. I am thinking of doing a resistance check on them but.....not fun to check them all :(

Any assistance would be appreciated. Michael

That code has nothing to do with the ABS. If it were a wheel speed sensor problem, you'd have an ABS light on with a code. P0500 deals with the engine/tranny components. Sounds like you have some electrical gremlins, i'd suggest fixing those first. Especially whatever is blowing your ECU/IG fuse. Then after the wiring is good, and you still get the code, find a RM and diag from there.

Thanks for your reply. What kind of gremlins--where to begin? With a load--the wipers or windows? Or with the ECU? How does one approach this?
