2001 Body Mount Bolts

Hi friends,

Looking at dropping new poly body mount bushings into the truck this weekend, and figure I should just replace the bolts and nuts too. After searching for a while I can't find the answer to this question:

Does anybody know the OEM specs on those bolts (so I can find replacements), or should I just go straight to OEM? :noidea:

What’s your reasoning for doing poly body mounts?? I considered doing them while I was installing the 1” body lift but decided against it because it makes your ride more stiff and more vibrations. I didn’t want that rough road feeling even though it’s not my DD but if it’s just a rock crawler or off roading truck I would say go for it.

In my definitely incomplete reading I can't find anything that clearly says poly bushings at OEM height leads to a meaningful change in the ride.

Not a DD, and not a rock crawler either. With the suspension I plan to put in, I'm hoping any slight increase in stiffness can be offset. Happy to hear if I am wrong, since I haven't put them all in yet!
 
Agreed. I am still considering doing the rear mounts to poly for when I upgrade my rear bumper. Whole poly kit is 215 vs 85 for just rear bushings.. Keep us updated on ride quality. As for the bolt size I can’t quite tell you because I run extended bolts with the 1” body lift. But what I can tell you is that once I installed the bolts I ended up cutting off about two inches that hung down toward the bottom. Reason being two of my stock body mount bolts were bent sideways at the bottom from rocks on the trails, so I took a precautionary measure and trimmed them down
 
No real reason to replace them unless rust is an issue. I've never pulled a body mount bolt out of any Toyota of the era that had any abnormal wear on it.

I did all poly body mounts last fall. energy suspension kit.

I will be pulling the poly out and going back to OEM. The ride on the poly mounts is noticeable more harsh in cold weather. Once the temp lets down to 20 deg the poly mounts are like riding on a board. As the temp goes up the ride improves, so if you live someplace where it gets cold don’t do it. I think overall in all temps the poly is much harsher. I'm now satisfied that I will no longer be using poly on any mounts in the future. I don't think you can compensate for vibration with suspension, I used to have that assumption as well.

It is true the Toyota mounts will run you a lot more than the poly bushings

the only real advantage to poly IMO is it's potential to last, but the OEM stuff last for 15-20 years.

I have both front and rear 4X4innovations bumpers. After the bumper install, I installed Energy Suspension poly body mounts, the black ones, not the cute red ones. The front bumper was touching fenders after, and the rear bumper was on flex on right quarter on flex (right quarter was tweaked a little from former body work, but not noticeable). Not sure if rear quarter flex touching before new poly mounts, but may have. For front I even backed the the nuts off all the way so no down force other than body weight, still touched or almost touched, but def on flex.
So I ended up giving it a Toytec 1 inch body lift (which comes with new longer bolts). No problem after that. I don't have any problem with the ride quality and I'm in colder climate. Also I actually like the look of a little bumper gap better, and also 1 inch taller is nice.

[MENTION=168172]sleepydad[/MENTION] interesting story about the ride. I live in the Denver area so nowhere near as cold as where you are, but still making me consider options here. And it makes sense that the suspension can't make up for vibration and noise. Thx for the additional reading.
[MENTION=125309]dogtail[/MENTION] that sucks about the bumper contact. The body on this one is pristine and I'm not yet planning on replacing the front bumper at all. I'll hope that I don't have to follow up immediately with a body lift to keep it off the bumper.
[MENTION=90352]UnderFire[/MENTION] good to know about the bolts. Will plan to re-use unless something happens on extraction. We are lucky to have an exceptional hardware store here in town, which stocks class 12.9 metric bolts I can use if I need to replace the ones that are in there.

Between now and the weekend I'll be debating with myself whether to replace them all, knowing that I might want to pull them out and put OEM's back in, or just doing the rear. Something to occupy all this dead space in my mind.

This is the first step
 
I would recommend to do the rears if you plan on putting a rear tube/plate bumper on and going off-roading and getting flexy. If your keeping it mostly stock and not pushing the truck off road just leave the OEM bushings on.
 
Decided I needed to use my garage time over the weekend to brew some beer, so didn't get to this. But I'll update on ride etc when I do it. How many I replace may depend on the conditions of the OEM ones in there.
