2002 Intake Silencer Removal

I have an 02 4Runner that I recently did the deckplate mod on, and was looking into doing the ISR mod, but even through my searching, I have found very little info on the mod for the 2002. I was wondering if someone has a full right up specifically for the 02? Or do I have to piece it together between the edited posts? Thanks.

Basically have to piece it together. There's a youtube video I saw once though, that's probably as helpful as anything.

Some users on here just purchase the AirAid intake tube. More expensive, but direct fit.

That is the major part that is the issue, trying to get someone to make a compatable pipe.

That's the only manufacturer I've seen that only sells the pipe. But at $168+ it's hard to buy something so simple. I've seen probably 5 different ways to make your own but you just have to use your imagination. Just remember to use materials that can handle 200+ temps consistently.

P.S. other than increased engine noise and less clutter, the ISR doesn't do a whole lot for the engine. At least not anything measurable.

I had the airraid for a while. Sold it on ebay because it did nothing but make the engine a little louder. I wouldnt waste my time if I were you.

I don't doubt that, but I do like the idea of less clutter and easier access to plug wires and coils, less is more. my question is where does the bulk of the additional noise come from? metal pipe louder than plastic pipe marine exhaust hose quieter than both? is the pipe responsible?

The factory intake silencer has a big chamber on it. Its that big square on it. Thats what muffles the sound. The response might be better with the straight tube but not enough for me to notice.

yeah I think I would rather hear my tunes than my engine!

Hopefully someone has the answer to my question, because I PM'd ALBPM over on yotatech, but I doubt he checks it anymore because he posted it back in 05. If anyone has done the ISR on an 02, can you literally just remove the silencer and replace it with a solid piece of pipe? It looks like on the older models you needed to have multiple ports on the pipe, but in the 02 write up it looks like the lines just reroute other places.

You are over thinking this. If there is a vacuum line going in to that section then it will need to have that port replaced. If there isn't, then it won't.

Yes the 2002 just uses a strait pipe to replace the silencer.

Alright, in the write up he had the ends expanded to fit the runner hoses, was this because he simply didnt start with the right sized pipe? I would think if you got the right diameter pipe it would work? Sorry, I am new to cars and everyone on here knows way more than I do. Sorry for all of the questions.

Correct, most people use exhaust pipe for this mod. Exhaust pipe comes in standard sizes that do not fit the exact size of the intake pipe here. People use exhaust pipe because muffler shops can easily modify (expand) the pipe to fit the specific dimension given.

There are no readily available pipes in the size needed.

It's an odd size for normal pipe. 2.75". Most exhaust pipe comes in 1/2" increments. Having the ends flared made it fit better and it won't harm the flow.

Ok, do you think a 2.5" pipe would work if I used a stronger hose clamp? I don't know how much give is in the rubber hose.
