2002 Intake Silencer Removal

You can not compare a race car to anything remotely related to a 4runner other than they both use an engine, tires, and transmission. Two entirely different beasts with two entirely different uses. Lest we forget that race cars regularly turn 9000+(15,000 in some instances)rpm and have no regard for intake noise, mileage, or 100k mile reliability.

Well, mileage in racecars is typically crucial, but that's beside the point. The point is, if resonators made more power, high performance engines (where not leaving power on the table actually IS a priority) would have resonators. Most don't.

You are still trying to compare an apple and an orange. A street driven engine is an entirely different animal with entirely different operating parameters than a race engine. The principles don't even compare given the design characteristics of each. It's like comparing the space shuttle to a commercial air liner.

Eh, physics tends to apply to internal combustion engines rather universally. But what do I know.
 
I love how this thread blew up with a debate. I started it just asking about some pipe sizes and specifics on how to actually perform said modification, but...what do I expect when posting anything about such a "controversial" topic. XD

and I honestly cant see how this can be a controversial subject.

its common sense that allowing your engine to breath better and exhaust freer is a good thing for many sound provable reasons.

this is like trying to argue that square tires are better.

I have 100% empirical evidence that changing my intake and muffler gave me 2+mpg better mileage.
and I have tried everything you can think of to get better gas mileage and nothing gave me so much as a teaspoon per gallon better mileage until I did that.

If you have the money the best bet is the Airiad jr kit.
It has totally paid for itself in gas savings.

Yeah, if people go into it expecting a ridiculous change, it isn't going to happen, it's like a $30 mod on the expensive side, and even if it just helps the "butt-o-meter" with sound and pick-up, maybe a few mpgs, I am looking forward to doing it. It is a matter of personal preference when it all boils down to it, it isn't worth arguing over. XD Its all for the love of tinkering with our vehicles, that's the way I see it with these low price mods, I can understand if someone drops a few grand on a SC and it has little to no gain, but for a few hours and a few bucks, not worth the argument.

I have way too many years of experience to say the above is so so true

I don't think that Toyota wants to leave hp or mpg on the table as someone said.
But they also have to design around emissions standards, common buyers noise standards, and making their rigs reliable knowing most people don't maintain as they should
but luckily I don't have to worry about emission testing where I live. I don't mind a bit louder, and I maintain my rig prob better then what Toyota has designed for ( miles/months/etc)

Ive already got a free flow muffler, and am looking forward to my spectre intake install ( a gift from rcastle) just waiting on a TRD big O gasket

of course that starts a debate too.....the big O gasket, but it fits with this discussion. so what is the advantage of the big O,if it was good Toyota would include it already.....wouldn't they?....well....Toyota had to install the D gasket to slow air flow, to help get the emissions levels down.....emissions...not hp or mpg was the design constraints of the D gasket
Why did TRD make it an O gasket.....to remove restrictions on air flow and emissions was not a concern

In any case, I like the easier access to the engine, the cleaner look....and if I can pick up 2mpg im all for it, that would put me at 23.

How loud is the free flow muffler? Which one did you go with?
 
put on just b4 I got it, I think its a magnaflow copy....called max flow ?
anyway that what I remember being told, and it is not original and it is louder than stock ( when sitting next to another 2000 v6)
but when it goes, I will go borla

Racecar engines operate in a very narrow RPM range, and do MANY things to deal with the pressure waves in those ranges.

Ever seen a tunnel ram? How about the huge intake plenum that's on top of high performance V12 engines using ITB? Both are there for the same reason as the resonator Toyota uses... improving volumetric efficiency.

For someone who claims to tune engines for a major automotive company, you sure as hell don't seem to know much about it.

One of these days I'll learn to shut up.
