2002 Intake Silencer Removal

Well I got 2MPG better mileage, and without question much better throttle response.
that was with BOTH the Intake and Muffler.
If the muffler gave me 90% of that then fine makes no difference.
The muffler made zero difference in the throttle response BTW.

So obviously the better airflow of the intake is making a difference or the throttle response would be unchanged.
Obviously my MAF is reading just fine also.


Do WTF you wish, if I bought another 4Runner changing the Intake and Muffler would be the first thing I would do to it.
Its already paid for itself.

I will stick to my empirical evidence.
I checked my MPG for almost 2 whole years prior to getting the Intake and Muffler and never once got over 18.8mpg my average was less than that.
After the Intake and muffler and with well over 8000 miles put on it in a month while hauling 800# in the cargo area my average was 19.83 and my top was 21.47.
that's all the proof I need.

Im 63. Been driving everything from MGTF's to bugeye sprites to BMW to Volvo turbos to dodge diesels to big block fords to chevy two tons.
Many of those fuel injected with computers
and that's just cars....not including all the bikes this old man has had.
my last one a triumph triple...a fuelly...and changing the intake and exsaust helped not only power but mpg
I am hard pressed to think freeing up the intake and the exsaust does not help. I have seen too many positive results over the years

However...in this forum I will say...I have a free flow exsaust now.(previous owner installed) with the 3/4 roof rack and kayak bars, and wide tires I am avg 20+MPG on the commute and around town (85/15) Next week I will add a free flow intake that was gifted to me and I will continue my normal commute of 210 miles round trip. Mu commute takes me into elevation changes of over 3000 feet. I will not change my driving patterns and I will run many tanks off gas comparing mpg. Because what im after is a bit more power but maninly mpg.
Whatever the results I will post them here
If I see a step backward ,,,,I will reinstall the stock intake and rethink my beliefs on intake and exsaust...at least as far as this Toyota. I don't think the one inch lift I did this weekend should have much negative effect

I envy those of you getting 18+. Mine is sitting around 13.7. I hope to rectify that after checking timing this weekend. Sorry for the derail.
 
I drove 1200 miles from S Carolina to Iowa in April this year. That was with it packed with everything I could fit in it. Maybe 500 lbs, I dont know. I was moving to Iowa. I averaged around 20.3 MPG (if I remember correctly, long ass drive) - deck plate closed, OEM air intake and OEM muffler. Then Drove another 1400 miles in June from Iowa to Colorado (and back) through Nebraska down I-80 which is as flat and straight an interstate as you can get. I had my deckplate open, stock air intake and muffler. I averaged 21.8 MPG going average of 65-70 MPH (average both ways.) If anybody tells me I would have got 24 or 25 MPG with an Airraid Im gonna have to just laugh at that. I had the Airaid installed for 3-4 years and took many a long trip with it. Never got above 22 MPG with or without it. This is all "real world" proof. Throttle response improvement was never anything I noticed but I dont race the thing at all...so maybe. I monitor all my MPG with a trusty Scanguage II that Ive had for at least 11 years.

Generally you will get a little better mileage at higher altitudes (Iowa to Colorado vs SC to Iowa). Since there is less oxygen in the air at altitude (and less in the exhaust for the O2 sensors to detect), the ECM will not add as much fuel (i.e., it will run a little leaner than at lower altitudes). Also there is less drag on the vehicle in thinner air, and the tire pressure (compared to the outside air) will be higher, creating less rolling resistance. I drove to Colorado a couple of years ago and noticed my mileage went up when I hit western Kansas and stayed up all through Colorado, then went back down in eastern Kansas. The engine makes less power at altitude, but the economy generally goes up a bit.
 
Bringing this thread back to life! I had to note an observation that could not be ignored. My 98 with full armor and 33's gets me approximately 200 - 205 miles per full tank. No matter how conservative I drive, I don't really deviate from those numbers. After reading this post (thanks 98OzarksRunner) and doing a little reading about the Helmholtz resonator I decided to remove my Airraid Jr. intake and put back my stock intake and resonators. I figured why not, it only took 5 mins. Guess what, i'm at 192 miles with a quarter of a tank left!!! I figure I'll squeeze out about 230 miles which is unprecedented. In order to make this experiment work I kept my driving characteristics the same, to and from work (99% freeway).

Throttle response and performance is negligible, however the increased fuel economy is not. Keep in mind the ISR mod was one of the first mods I did when I got my rig so I really didn't have anything to compare too till now.
