2002 T4R urgent maintenane needs

Hi All,

I have a 2002 T4R, 185k, rust free. I just had the dreaded strawberry milkshake issue. I just got the truck back from the shop, 2500 lighter in the pocket book. I did get a 3 year/36k mile warranty. I wish I would have researched and changed out the radiator.

I want this truck to last us 3 more years at least. Can someone point me to a thread, or give me other necessary maintenance items that cause expensive known problems? All fluids changed, rebuilt trans and new radiator, new timing belt, ujoints, bearings, CV shafts replaced, new muffler... Any additional advice would be appreciated.

We love this truck and want it to last the tranny warranty.

The only other major concern with these rigs are the lower ball joints. Replace them with oem toyota ones. Once they fail, they do so in a very ugly way that can potentially cause you or someone else injury. That's why it's prudent to change them at regular intervals, especially if your truck is lifted.

Pop the hood and look for a sticker that says when your timing belt was changed. it's usually a 2x4" sticker with mileage on it.

Its not a failure that will destroy stuff but it will leave you stranded. It should be done every 100k miles even though you dont hear about failures much but its still a belt and will fail sometime.

I bought a kit off ebay with all oem parts for like $300 with new belts and many extra's. I just watched youtube videos and read many write ups. It look me one full day going slow and watching videos over and over as I moved along lol.

radiator bypass/lower ball joints/ timing belt + normal fluid changes and you should go 300000 miles. especially since you just rebuilt your tranny :)

There is a ton of vendors who sell OEM kit's. Just make sure you keep a close eye on OEM parts versus "OEM replacement parts".

Watch the timing belt brand, WP brand (Aisin, spelling?), ect.

I got mine for $250 with vc gaskets, thermostat, WP, timing belt, all 3 drive belts, new tensioner, wp gasket, ect.

Poster; you mentioned new timing belt, did they do a water pump? Tensioner, idlers, what exactly was replaced on that service?

Look over your truck for torn boots on ball joints, leaks, ect. Replace as needed, nothing out of the ordinary there really. A popular mending/upgrade are tundra front brakes. Maybe look into those. Maybe shocks? Steering components? Rack bushings? Again, just look it over, replace as necessary.

At that price did they replace all the hoses also ???? If that is something that should be next for sure. Trans fluid in hoses is not a good thing unless it is a Tranny line ( i know what they are called but for the life of me I'm not coming up with it, still have not had coffee yet) They will glaze over.

Bought my OEM timing kit and other parts before from aircabinman on Ebay, he will tailor make a kit for you as well if you don't need all the parts listed.
