2003-2005 TWO wires for DRL? or no DRL.

Hello all
2005 V8 SPORTS 4x4

I dont know if i have DRL or not
When it is running
Amber comes on.

When turning signal is turned on...it blinks

When headlight comes on, the DRL goes off.


Here is funny part.
The Plug has only two wires (DRIVER for example)
RED YELLOW in PIN #3
BLACK white in PIN # 2
Pin #1 is bLANK.

The socket has 3 male pins (part the connects to wire harness)

The other side has receptacle for the bulb 4157NA..


If I have only two wire, how do I have DRL?
Isnt the DRL wire suppose to be 3 wires?


Would the VIN show the DRL?
Tried looking up through Toyota website, I dont see DRL.

Can someone comfirm if I truly have DRL? Or did Toyota change the wiring schematic? TWO wires....only and switch to 7440 or 7443 bulb for the front?
4157NA and 7443 are compatible.

I always thought I had DRL until i realize I have only two wires going into front turn signal.

You have DRL. The only difference between DRL and non-DRL is the flasher relay. The wiring, connectors, and bulbs are the same. You can upgrade a non-DRL 4runner to DRL by buying a relay on ebay, but you have to remove the dashboard to install it (or if you're lazy like me, just reach behind the dash and rest the new relay on the old one; I haven't noticed any rattling sounds).

You won't need to remove the whole dash, but rather the lower parts. The DRL mod guide from this site is a fantastic resource- Toyota 4Runner DRL Mod

I swapped to LED turns and unplugged the 12-pin flasher relay, plugged in the toyota adapter harness, and then the new 8-pin flasher from Diode Dynamics. I didn't even remove the original flasher as its connected and it was a safe corner to cut lol. I do like the DRL so I might add a relay in once I know how to do it properly, but that guide will still get you most the way.

So Toyota changed wire harness/plug so that D4157 bulb uses only one filament for both the DRL and turning signal at? What is the purpose of dual filament bulb.... (8w/24w) bulb if there are only 2 wires?

Mine is 2 wires- Red with yellow stripe and White with black stripe. From my limited understanding, this is done using a relay; turning "off" to create flashing while the DRL is on/turning "on" to create flashing when the DRL is off. I do have dual filament bulbs, but perhaps that never mattered. Someone else on this forum is likely to have a better understanding of the overall relay system, but hopefully this helps.

My only concern with this set up...the 4157NA burn out faster because it is using only 1 filament for DRL and Turn signal (even though 2 fialment are available)> It is constant running the on 25Watt filament. I guess DRL will always be brighter versus the 3 wire setup on some of the 2003-2005 Runners..

Youre explanation makes sense. Not sure when Toyota decided change the set up..

So mine is pretty much similar to yours. TWO wires in the #2,#3 pin slot #1 being empty.....Using D4157NA bulb and socket.. Relay trigger flashing and no flashing depending on whether the trigger (turning signal lever is raised or lower) is on/off.

Sorta defeats the purpose of a dual filament bulb. lol



I see some members turning on DRL by changing out the relay if it didnt come with DRL from factory option. They would use the D7440 bulb..which burns out quicker due to 1 filament for DRL and TUrning signal...
