Greetings
The more I read on the forum regarding changing out the stereo system the more I get confused. Can someone point me to a link or give some high level instructons please?
I have a 2003 Limited 4Runner with the JBL 10 speaker system.
I will be replacing things one at a time due to budget. I will start with the Head Unit. The amp and speakers will come later.

Can I just swap out the head unit wiht an aftermarket one? I read that there needs to be a special harness used.

Hi, I am working on the same project, swapping out an aftermarket cd player (alpine) for the original. I haven't got my hands dirty yet, but will let you know if I run into any unforeseen obstacles. Good luck.

Thanks and good luck.
There is a lot of information on the forum but sometimes you have to piece it together.

So, I've talked to two local dealerships and they both tell me that my 4runner originally had a 6-disc changer in it, based on a VIN lookup. I'd be fine with replacing the aftermarket cd player that is in there now with a single CD player, but the dealership says I will need a different wiring harness for this to work. I'm going to research more and findout if this is true or not.

the amp is powered by a digital signal that comes from the head unit. This is what I found at Crutchfield

PAC Toyota Factory Integration Adapter $74.99

I placed the order yesterday for the head unit, steering wheel harness and PAC harness, it comes with the dash kit.
I plan on doing the install next Saturday.
