Just finished installing my Sub Ordnance Self Powered Sub unit in to my JBL 2004 4Runner. The upgrade is incredible. The low end bass completely fills out the sound and gives great punch and warmth. This upgrade is for anyone who doesn't want to pull out or remove the factory sub. I still have my factory sub running for whatever that's worth to the sound - Not much!
Sound Ordnance B-8PT Single 8" Amplified Flatsub
I slid it underneath the passenger seat. The install is like a typical sub. You need to run a power line from the battery, thru the engine bay to a gromel to inside the cabin. A ground, I used the seat bolt. A remote 12V on, I used the rear 12V power plug. For speaker wire I used high power line and spliced straight in to the channel 1 and channel 2 inputs that go in to the factory subwoofer. You could get away with just running one set of speaker wire from 1 channel to 1 channel of the sub/amp. I tested this and it sounded fine. But ended up running from both channels.
Biggest PITA of the job was the interior trim removal. Getting in to the factory sub compartment was a dog, but doable. Whole job took a day. Here are some pics of the install:
My goal was to hide the power wire as much as possible. Used black flex loom tubing to make it blend in.
And getting the power wire in to the cabin. I went thru the passenger side.
Got in to the rear sub. Spliced in to the 2 channels +ve and -ve's and ran the wire to the amp.
Speaker wire spliced to stock sub wires and then ran to sub/amp. Blue wire is 12V remote on, which is connected to rear power plug:
These wires were shortened and trimmed before final install. I just had everything plugged in quickly to test the unit before cleaning up.
Power wire ran along door then thru carpet and out vent slit under seat. Ground is bolted on to rear right of seat.
Finished product. The seat flap is lifted up so you can see the unit. When you drop that flap back down it looks completely hidden and stock:
Any questions let me know. The improvement to the stock JBL sound system is amazing. Could not be happier.
