I am going to tow a 4k pound trailer and after loading up might go to 5k. Do you think I will need a transmission oil cooler? If so were would you recommend buying it, from toyToyota OR ?
Have 2004 4Runner sport Edition 2 wheel drive, great machine, my first and love it.
Thanks for the info, still leaning

Is this for the V6 or V8? How long are you going to tow it for? Where do you live and what's the temperature outside? I would say if you're not going to travel cross country with it you would be just fine without it, but I'm not positive on that. My V8 is rated to 7k lbs, I think it came with the tranny cooler on it - maybe with the tow package?

I have the V6 and will be travling the country, think the cooler is a benefit either way. What kind of cost am i looking at.

I don't think the cooler is very expensive for what it is, and it sounds like you're going to be doing a lot of driving with it, so I would do it. It can't hurt anything, and even if your truck would be fine without it, if you have it that will just add to the life of your transmission.

Maybe try looking it up on Partznet or go to the dealer and get the part number for the cooler then look it up around the internet to see if its worth getting it from the dealer or the internet.

Just go ahead and tow with it, just make sure you change the fluid at 15k and flush it at 30k, towing heats the fluid more and thats what breaks it done so long as you do trans maintenance you should be fine, also let the truck get up to speed easy, don't be hotrodding across the country cause that will shorten the life.

Remember it's a Toyota so it has a higher build quality and if you take care of it it will last longer then if you just drive it with no maintenance:) if you tow often then your truck will benefit with more fequent servicing of the trans

If you plan to tow often, then I'd recommend picking up a tranny cooler (you can purchase one at any auto parts store).

If it isn't a regular thing and something that you do once in a blue moon then it's no biggie. Just drive nice and slow and you'll be fine :) Just don't go speeding down a hill and get screwed ;)

Am I missing something?

I thought the Sport, (if not all 4runners) came with a transmission cooler? Look in front of the radiator. Isn't that the tranny cooler?

I thought so too, at least I think mine has one. You see the Radiator closest to the engine, then the A/C right in front of it, and the little small thing is the tranny cooler I thought.
