You will never hear your 4R ping as it has advanced detonation detection. It will sense the detonation and pull back the timing long before you would ever hear it.

I can guarantee that in hot weather if you are using 87 Octane the timing is going to be pulled back and you will not get your 270HP worth.

I'm getting tired of people on this board who claim that 87 is more than enough for your 4R. This may be the case in ideal circumstances but under hard acceleration in warmer climates I can guarantee that the timing will be retarded due to knock. This is a High Compression V8. You can only stretch physics so far.

Will it run fine on 87? You bet ya! That's why the motor has advance anti-knock sensing. Will you get 100% of the power the engine is capable of making on 87? Maybe not. That's why I use 91.

One of these day I'm going to buy a hookup for my laptop and post the results.

I heard my 04 V-6 Pinging today its about 75 deg out and I run 87, I was going up a hill at WOT and as It downshifted I heard it ping a lil... nothing major, I may run some preimum next tank and go up the same hill at wot... See if there is a difference...

We must have posted at same time or I just missed this. Thanks for the info. It seems to make sense then, if I'm towing hard, to go ahead with the higher octane gas then - especially if I've got some good mountains to pull!
