Hey everyone,
I just finished a fan clutch replacement on a 2008 Toyota 4Runner with the 4.7L 2UZ-FE engine. The Aisin part you need specific to the 2005-2009 4Runner with the V8 is Aisin FCT-075.
This took me 4.5 hours to complete, but I could probably do it in 2 hours if I had to do it again. I did not have to drain or remove any coolant lines.
Tools that you will need:
12mm wrench, 12 & 10mm socket, long screwdriver, mental fortitude.
Instructions:
1. Unbutton and remove the front top radiator trim so that you have access to the fan shroud.
2. Unbolt the coolant reservoir from the holding brackets. I simply kept all lines attached and set the entire tank towards the driver side firewall.
3. The fan shroud has a few (10mm?) bolts towards the top of the fan shroud, unbolt these. There are no bolts that you have to remove towards the bottom of the shroud. At the bottom of the fan shroud, it simply slides into a small retaining pocket (for lack of a better word). I believe there were only 2 or 3 bolts for the fan shroud at the top. No need to remove the shroud at this point.
4. Remove the silver engine trim cover that says 4.7L V8 by removing the 2, 10mm bolts and set this aside.
5. Loosen the air intake tube faciner where the intake connects to the throttle body. Then you can just move the end of the air intake tube on top of the throttle body. This simply gives you extra working room.
6. Now is the fun part, you have to remove the 4, 12mm fan clutch bolts that connect the fan clutch to the pulley. When you try to loosen these bolts, you will find the pulley tries to rotate in the direction you loosen. I took a long square flat head screwdriver and wedged it through one of the other bolts at an angle to help keep the pulley from rotating while I loosened the 12mm fan clutch bolts. I'm sure someone makes a tool to make this easier. My recommendation is first remove the bottom most bolt as it is the hardest.
6. Now that your 4 fan clutch bolts are removed and your fan shroud is loose, you can wiggle out the entire fan/fan clutch unit out. Note that I didn't have to remove the fan shroud completely out of the vehicle, but I did have to have it loose enough to move around while I finagle the fan unit out.
7. Get yourself a cold beverage, your knuckles will thank you.
8. Now is the easy part, simply unbolt the four bolts securing the fan to the old fan clutch and bolt it back to your new fan clutch (have I said fan clutch enough times?)
9. For reinstallation, just reverse your previous steps. Make sure after everything is button up and you have ensured there are no spare rags or parts laying around, fire up your rig and test that the fan is blowing properly.
10. Congratulations on a job well done! Have a second cold beverage, your knees will thank you.
