I bought an Ipod controller from crutchfield. Made by ISimple ran me about $160. Its rather expensive but to retain your stock radio and use of the steering wheel controls it has been worth every penny. Its actually been moved from car to car all you have to get is the vehicle specific harness.
Crutchfield: Car Stereo, Speakers, Home Theater, LCD TV, Digital Cameras
Punch in your vehcile info and radio model. It will show you what you can use. Then if go price shopping. Amazon. Ebay. etc.
Alot of the better ipod adapters will plug into the changer port on the back of the headunit.

This is very specific for ipod /iphone right? Is there an interface for a micro USB port instead?
I have an Android phone that I want to use in my 2005 4RUNNER V6 Sport JBL Single CD.
Is there an adaptor I can buy to plug this in my HU, or do I need to swap out the HU for some other unit? Anything else I need to get to make this happen? TIA!

The above link I posted for the GROM USB/ipod/aux/android will work perfectly for you. I installed mine last week and love it. Theres an app you download for your droid so it links directly and u can use steering wheel controls. You just plug your android charger into your phone and the usb end in to the usb connection to the stereo.
Took about an hour to install and was the easiest plug n play Ive done.
Hi V8. I just noticed this post of yours. Do you know if our JBL HUs all have that CD port? If they do, this would be all I need to hook up my Android phone. I noticed on the GROMM site they have a unit for Android devices.

Thats what the back looks like of mine. Even though I don't have a CD changer there was a stock harness attached to it. The grom harness has 3 plugs in the one harness. You remove the stock harness that goes to stock H/U. Then plug the new harness in to the HU, plug factory harness you just unplugged in to new grom harness and the 3rd connection u plug in to the grom module.
Grom sent 2 harnesses with their package to make sure it fits. a TOY1 and a TOY harness. I believe one of them is from earlier model Toyotas. But either way you will be sure one of them will fit your H/U.

The grom unit itself I just kinda stuffed in besides the H/U but off to the right. Theres a nice gap there. You can zip tie it to something if youre worried about if moving around.
I ran the cables in to my glove box. Zip tied them together to keep it neat and from tangling. Ive seen other people drill holes in that little push door compartment under the heating panel, but theres too much cord to fit it in there. Plus I didnt want to drill holes in to my center console or any of the other little consoles. My goal is to keep my 4runner as stock as possible. I can take it all out when i sell the rig.

Thanks. Good to know it can be stuffed in the same place as the current HU. Like you, I don't want to drill holes anywhere.
Do you get any other audio out through the interface other than music? Reason why I ask is because I plan to use mine also for the awesome built-in Google GPS software on Andriod devices and I'm hoping that the voice guidance from that will also go out through the speakers through this unit.
I'll call them this morning when they open to confirm before they ship the unit to me as that may be a deal breaker for me. Reason why I'm questioning the possibility of this is because they require their software to be installed on your device. Have you noticed if your iPod works without that software of theirs and sound goes out to the speakers without any issues, but you just can't control it from your deck (assuming you don't have the software installed on the iPod)?
Having the GPS functionality (sound coming out through the car speakers) is 50% of the reason why I bought the unit.
I called GromAudio and had to order a different unit that support Bluetooth as well as a Bluetooth dongle - total came to $178. The unit itself was $129 + another $50 for the BT dongle.
The voice guidance will be streamed via BT to the unit and then it goes out to the speakers. It does not go out through the micro USB as a digital signal, that's why I had to buy that other unit.
The other benefit is that I can also then use the unit for handsfree BT calling while in the car and the audio comes out through the car speakers.
Can't wait to get the unit and the phone!

Thats the exact same unit and pricing I got. Plus extra for the usb plus extra for the ipod adapter.. haha they charge for everything! they did throw in a free 2gig usb tho.
The bluetooth works awesome. I just purchased a Google Nexus 7" tablet mainly for my 4Runner. Having the 7" tablet for a GPS is awesome. Scrolling is very smooth and lots of features. Plus its nice and big to see. I haven't used the voice thru the GROM yet. Good to know about the bluetooth and glad I decided to purchase it after all.
Good thing about the bluetooth is that you can use your steering wheel controls to pick up or hang up phone calls. Pretty cool.
You will be really happy with the unit. Sound quality is mint.

I just also got a Nexus 7 and I can't wait to start using it with this unit in my truck! Let me know how the voice guidance sounds when you use it. I'm very much interested in hearing your feedback on the unit.
Edit: When did you buy your Nexus 7? Has it been over 2 weeks? I bought mine less than 2 weeks ago and am returning it based on some rumors I have read online that Google is planning to release a 32GB version at the end of the month for the same price as the 16GB model. The 16GB model may be killed off completely or dropped in price to $200. I really wanted the 32GB model anyway, so will wait till the end of the month and see what happens.
I don't have the steering wheel controls for the bluetooth, so I should be getting those next. Were they standard in your truck? So the way you are using your Grom unit in your truck is for music, voice guidance for navigation and then you pair your phone to the bluetooth on the Grom to place and receive calls?
My phone plan is also up for renewal so I'm getting a Galaxy Note 2 and will tether the Nexus off it when driving.
There's an app on the Google Play store called Tablet Talk and it allows you to place and receive calls and texts from your tablet via your phone. I guess that app will be pointless now that I could do the same thing with the Grom unit by pairing my phone to the Grom. Is that how you're using yours?

I purchased my Nexus 7 a couple months ago so Im sure I missed the boat on the 32 gig. Sux, but whatever. Im still looking for a good mount for it. I got one of ebay and wasn't too happy with the quality.
I think your confused by what I meant by bluetooth steering wheel controls. You use your stereo steering wheel controls for your bluetooth. Next track picks up a call. Previous track rejects call. Volume is volume. Pretty neat.
If I need internet on the nexus i will teather off my iphone.. I Got CoPilot which is a really good GPS app. It has offline maps so no need to teather unless i have to.
I never knew about tablet talk, but it sounds really cool. Im going to check it out. I don't really care about the voice navigation. I just like to have a real time map on the screen moving around so I can see where i am. Maybe once every 2 months i will need to put a destination in to gps and get guided there, so no biggy for me just to use tablet speakers for that.
I got a mount and holder from here Device Holders and Dashboard Vehicle Mounts*-*ProClip Car Mounts for Mobile Phones, Tablet, and Handheld Devices - they have very good reviews and are supposed to be very solid mounts. The part I like best about them is that they don't go on your windshield but on one of the air vents.

2. Second question, what brand BT mic did you get? (I'm assuming you got one)
3. How does coPilot compare to the Google nav in terms of POI's, guidance efficiency,

I didn't know you had an iPhone, Tablet Talk only works for an Andriod phone and tablet.
However since you got the BT Dongle with your GROM unit, then if you have guidance on your nav, the sound should go out to the speakers, at least that's what the guy at Grom Audio told me.
6. Can you please do me a favor and test this out soon? I would be sorely dissappointed if it doesn't work like that.
7. Last question - does your truck have a 6 disc CD changer or is it like mine without a CD changer? I'm now concerned I won't be able to use this device in my truck because it did not come with a CD changer...
