Isn't the pathfinder a monocoque body design? The 4runner is a tried-and-true body on a ladder frame..superior stiffness offroad. Those monocoques are like turtle shells...the inherent strength is in the body itself, while on a ladder frame, the body is merely a decoration (you could drive a ladder frame truck w/ no body if you welded the seat rails directly to the frame!). A side advantage is you can body lift the ladder frame vehicle. Nissans also have cheap interiors...on par w/ Ford quality, at least since Western management took over the company. If you look at their pickups, they use the same suspension/drivetrain components as domestics (dana axles, R&P's, shock location, etc.). IMHO, the Toyota R&P's/diffs have more inherent strength given the same size as the dana's.
