2005 T4R v6 engine knock | Engine Rebuild

So, I am going to scrap rebuilding this engine since I do not have unlimited funds. I also shared the photos of the carnage above with a tech at Toyota who confirmed the block is toast.
The machine shop quoted me $1800 in labor only for the heads and block work, no parts included.

I have two leads on an '07 with159,000 miles and and '08 with 161,000 mile engine right around 3k. Should be done with this by this weekend going this route.

From what I understand, you can't mix v6 engines from 03-04 with 05-09 engine because the both use different transmissions, and also have difference ECM communication protocals. with an 05, an 08 engine on paper should work out

The engine is the same, just with an updated head gasket from what I've heard. The ECU and transmission just bolt up to the actual engine so there should be no issue at all with using a later model (06-09') engine in his 05' - same with any sensors attached to the engine that may have changed thru the years.

LOL...Well...
With the engine core at $150 I might keep the darn thing. '08 Taco engine comes with 1 yr warranty vs 90 day warranty on the 07 4runner.

Not sure if it's worth it to you, but found a 1gr on Facebook market place in KY for 800 bucks. I think the 3k asking prices are a bit nuts.

Yes, it is.The bonus for me is I got to see the Tacoma in running condition plus I got a one year warranty on the engine.

So I dropped the engine in but where the bolts go do not line up. Then I realized the transmission assembly is canted. It's not as simple as trying to turn it back to the normal orientation. Any ideas? 20210801_082257.jpg20210801_082447.jpg

Engine is in and it started at the first turn of the key. I let it idle while I checked for oil and coolant leaks. No leaks, I'm a happy camper so far. Put it in drive and no power. Remembered I didn't hookup my drive shaft so I put it in 4wd and it moved. Sweet. I put it in park and heard a whining noise briefly then shut the engine off . Tried to start it again but it didn't. By this time(7p) I had been working on this truck since 630 am. I leave everything as is and turned in for the night. That was yesterday.

She started up again first thing this morning. After shutting it off, I haven't been able to get it to start. The starter clicks and I can hear a low buzzing noise coming from the engine bay. Can't hear it from the cabin. The truck wont start in park or neutral so I can rule out the neutral switch, correct?

I am sure that I installed the torque converter correctly. It had transmission fluid in it and I rotated the TC onto the input shaft of the transmission. You know, the two clunk sounds it makes when it seats properly.
So, in the event I didn't seat the TC properly, could that cause it to size making it difficult for the starter to turn and start the vehicle?
Any other places you suggest to look?

Oh, when removing the engine, I lost some transmission fluid because the TC came out with the engine. Just guessing here...maybe 1.5 quarts. I haven't topped off the transmission yet. Could that be an issue?

Well..I'm up and running. Thanks to all who chimed in.
Still have the original motor that I will rebuild in the future.
