I'm amazed at the skill involved in doing this project. Hats off to you my friend. I have a 2005 and I'm keeping it a long time, 180,500 miles strong.

More bad news... definitely spun a bearing. The crankshaft cap bearings very worn as well.
Engine block and crankshaft may be toast. Very concerned about those deep scratches below the cyclinder wall.

Taking block and heads to machine shop tomorrow.20210705_171744.jpg20210705_171736.jpg20210705_145507.jpg20210705_145451.jpg20210705_143409.jpg20210705_143258.jpg20210705_141023.jpg20210705_141014.jpg

Thanks man. Learning a lot along the way labeling everything I can.

Have you called any dismantlers on what used engine would cost you? You will NEVER rebuild it back to original toyota specs. These engines are precisely built in clean rooms by experts. It may sound like fun until it grenades on you. Just sayin
Drcoffee,
I do get the point you are trying to make but I need the challenge and with the help of this forum, it can be done. I really hope I can avoid the grenade part though.

Ouch, that's a lot of carnage. Good on your for tackling this but personally I would get a used engine. It would always be in the back of my mind that I may have missed a damaged piece.

Crank definitely scrap, but block and heads should be salvageable.

The damage is fixable in my humble opinion. The crankshaft can be definitely fixed...re-grinding and polishing can be done by a specialty shop and oversized crank shaft bearings can be used.

My vote would be, buy a used engine, replace the timing chains while its out, and get the truck running again.

Keep the pile of bits so you can tinker with rebuilding it and then trash it. If you had bottomless pockets and a full machine shop at your disposal, I’d tell you, your nuts, go buy a used engine. :tea:

This is what I would do as well. All of those bearings are trash, crank is f'd from all of the washout of the head gasket leak, a couple rods are cut/broken??, it's not going to be cheap to fix all of this.

I was not expecting to see that much damage and got completely discouraged trying to continue the rebuild process. I wasn't even able to get the crank out of the block.
The block, heads, cams, pistons, connecting rods, caps, bearings are at a machine shop and they will let me know what's salvageable.
As a backup, I'll be trying to source a motor from pull-a-part in the mean time.

I appreciate all your comments.

Someone local to me said he has an 08 engine for $3200. What do you guys think? He'll give me the mileage tomorrow.

Beeze, roughly speaking, what was your anticipated budget and hours for a quality rebuilding with OEM parts? Before and after you discovered the extent of the damage.

3k on a rebuild. Time wise....3-4 hours every evening until it's done.

What triggered all the failure, is it just bad luck?
