2005 t4r v8

Hi all, just got past the newbie post min. and have a question about upgrading.

I'm thinking about replacing my 2000 V6 4R with an 8 cyl 4Runner. Found a 2005 with 35,000 miles on it priced at $22,500. Sounds too good to be true though the price seems high for a 13 year old vehicle. Looks like it's in pretty good shape, new wheels and tires.
Haven't looked at it yet but thinking seriously about it.

Any thoughts on whether this might be a good deal or not? Mileage does seem ridiculously low.

Thanks in advance for any input!

My neighbor has 1 with under 40k miles if memory serves. She mentioned upgrading vehicles and told her she could get $20k+ for hers. I'd try to negotiate the price lower if possible, but the price isn't too far off for a vehicle with that low a miles.

Depending on where you live and the trim/options that's a ballpark for that mileage. I bought a 2008 limited V8 4WD (every available option except 3rd row, RAS, and rear dvd) with 38k last year for similar price.

Definitely look for rust and see about the timing belt/water pump service, Toyota told me it's 90k OR 9 years so they did mine with only 38k.

Definitely would check it out in person. Price is a little higher than I would pay and one of the risks you run with buying a 13 year old vehicle with that low of mileage is the fact that it hasn't been run much so the parts/fluids have been sitting there for a while and due to age could cause some issues. When a vehicle is run consistently it keeps parts happy and running. Would check it out first, but super low miles and these 2UZ-FE engines have been known to run forever. I have an '05 V8 with 185,000 and she runs like a champ

I bought mine in the NW in 2013 for $22,500 with 22k miles on the clock...have it still and we just breached the 65k mark...runs like a top and I'm stoked to keep it going! I say do it!

Ok I'm going to play devils advocate here. I just took delivery on a 2006 Sport Edition with 79k, its a v6, but that shouldn't really matter in this context. I paid $12,795 OTD. Its clean, minty even. Frame needs some POR-15 love but I would venture to say any truck that has left the desert sun will need the same.

So, for about $10,000 more, you're getting a truck with 40,000 less miles? Considering these rigs easily reach 3-400k miles..is that really worth it in the grand scheme of things? Hell with that 10k you could do a LOT to it. Lift, armor, wheels etc.

If upgrades aren't your style and you like to run stock, that 10k could be set aside for repairs and I think its safe to say that even if your transmission goes out or you need to buy a new long block..you would still come out way ahead.

It's a 13 year old truck..sure it doesn't have a ton of miles..but stuff still ages sitting in a garage/lot/storage.

Eh, just my 2 cents. I'd look for something clean closer to 75k miles for $10-14k.

Oh I completely forgot, you could find the lowest mileage V6 out there and throw a URD supercharger kit on it for $6k. You'll have more power than the v8 and more money in the bank!

Another thing to add, is it from a dealer or private seller? Mine was from a dealer and I have a full warranty on everything but fluids/belts, tires, brakes, etc. for 5 years or 125k.

I just purchased my 2006 V8 Sport Edition 4WD from the original owner that bought it new in 2005. She was about a 65 year old doctor. Has 110,000 miles on it but didn't pay anywhere near $20-$25K mark.. It is in what I would call excellent shape for a 2006 that spent its whole life in the city. One bad thing was it has never had the TB changed.. So I know i'll be out that $1200 if I go the dealer route or $800 if I go local mechanic.

First of all, I like to say thanks for all your thoughts. I've been on a few forums over the years and have never had a response like this!!

Fern-I would agree that if I pursue it, I would offer below the asking price.

Juicy-Didn't realize that it was 9 years on the belt-food for thought. It's a private owner, no warranty.

Samm25-Definitely will check it out before moving on. Seller says a retired couple owned it before him and just didn't drive it that much. He does a lot of work travel in rentals, so he doesn't drive it much either.

LOSTR4-Good to hear you purchased a similar one and it's working out.

BriAntic-Good points, I'm not quite ready to pull the trigger, have some time to look.

jarod-TB is a big one. 2006 V8 must be a more expensive belt job than the one on my 2000 V6-I was recently quoted $780 for belt and H20 pump, from the dealer.

Thanks again, I'm still kicking it around. Here's the ad:

I'm sure I'll regret it later, but I'm selling my 4Runner. It's a 2005 with the rare 4.7L VVT-i V8 and SR5 package. It has 35,389 original, documented miles, no accidents, clean Carfax, and a clean title. Like all the V8 models, it's full time four wheel drive with high/low range, a lockable center differential and downhill assist control. It has Bilstein 5100 shocks front and rear, the brakes have been upgraded to 5th gen 4Runner (fronts only, rears are the same between model years), wheels are Method NV about a month old, and the tires are a new set of Yokohama Geolanders with about 3k miles on them. I'm the second non-smoking owner and it's in excellent condition inside and out. It has all the standard stuff- power windows, locks, cruise, etc. and it also has the sunroof option and tow package (has never been used to tow anything). Runs and drives great, no issues whatsoever. Asking $22,000 OBO for this super low mileage truck.

The V8 takes up a little more room in the engine bay and the belt is just as easy as the V6 in the 3RD generations. I wonder why they charge less for the 3.4L ?

I had a 1989 Toyota that had 175K when timing belt went in 2005, at that time I paid somewhere around $450 parts and labor if memory serves me correctly. I've read $800 to close to $2000 for the V8, guess it all depends on geographical location.. Plan to call all the local stealerships and see if maybe find one that will beat the others prices.. i've watched the videos on doing if yourself and think I could but the biggest obstacle I have is the time to do it..

Yes, it would take you probably 8-10 hours if you have some mechanical knowledge. I do my own belts and if everything goes right I can get a V8 done in about 7 hours. It's a good weekend project if you can find the time.

I was talking about an always garaged southern CA car with no rust driven by a sensible older woman.
You get what you pay for. I've been on the losing end of a "good deal" so it is all in the details.
Not saying you didn't get a great deal though, because you did.

That's a hell of a price...I'd take it to a Toyota dealer and have them do a pre-purchase inspection. Deals like this are unheard of...maybe it's dependent on the market in your area but I was in a similar situation with an '07 with v8 almost two years ago when I needed a new 4Runner.

The seller had 65k miles clocked and asked for 24k...we haggled back & forth until we agreed on 22k out the door with him covering PPI fees. It was in great condition other than a minor dent that was going to be buffed out anyway and this was in DC area

The fact you say it's an '05 with 35k miles and the seller is asking for 22.5k is kinda weird. Check the VIN on Toyota's site (you can make an account and add the vin as your personal vehicle, it'll list everything serviced through a dealership)

I believe he ended up using that $ toward a new toyota camry at the same dealership when we were wrapping up details regarding transaction

If it's sr5 I don't think I would pay that much for it, and also the v8's in the 4th gens are not all the same, they also added a gear in the tranny in 06 (I think). Also, there were less standard options in the earlier years so that factors into price as well, not all 4th gens are the same.

But it wouldnt be as reliable and would require premium fuel.

I don't want to derail this thread but perhaps you should do some research on the subject; you might be surprised in what you find.

Generally, tuning is the killer of forced induction engines (or lack of) not the forced induction itself. A supercharger running low boost pressures with a safe tune will live just as long as its n/a counterpart. URD kits are only pushing 5-6psi, in a world of 20-30+ psi setups, thats as safe as you can get.

Keep in mind I'm strictly talking about the 1GR-FE V6, the 2UZ has some teeny tiny rods. While Gadget (URD) says his kit is safe, and I'm sure it is, that engine has had enough naturally aspirated rod failures that I wouldn't put a supercharger anywhere near it.

Edit: You're definitely right about the fuel, its a moot point for me. All of my vehicles get premium.
