2005 V8, Starter failed 280,000 km? Also keeps rolling backwards in Park

Note* i am Overseas right now, so all information is relayed from mechanic directly as i cannot diagnose.

anyone have a starter failed on their V8, as far as i have heard its very rare these go bad. I had issues with it starter back in November but it would start if i put it in Neutral, or shift through the gears. Now it wouldn't start and he tried to start it from the starter relay and no crank. he replaced the starter with a Denso Starter ($800 CDN Labour&part) and he says it would start and then wouldnt start right after but would start again in a bit. Hes going to continue to look into it soon but any suggestions? also the car was rolling backwards while in Park, my parking brakes are not working so possible to be the parking shawl teeth busted?

I replaced 4 starters in my 2005 4runner. The OEM lasted 4 years.

I have AM starter in there now.

They last 4 years and then fail as well.

AM starter at Amazon is $100 - 1 year warantee.

OEM is over $300 and isn't any better.

I get about 4 years of service whether new or AM/new.

Tranny in my 2005 4runner with 150,000 miles shifts like new still ... knock on wood.
No high speed highways in Bahamas, and I think that has saved my 4runner tranny from lots of "heat".

$800 for a Toyota starter with labor is "nuts" IMO. My Yamaha boat mechanic (had three F225s) replaced the 4runner starter in my driveway in 25 minutes for $60. I stood and watched in amazement. Two bolts. Didn't use a jack either.
Having said that, the local T. dealer wanted over $900 to order one from Japan (I'm in the Bahamas), so we punted! Installation would have been added on.
There are twice as many "starts" on a car in the Bahamas as there is on a car in Miami.

Replacing the starter with another new AM starter solved my starter issues every time.

A starter can fail any time, but I would have diagnosed the problems with your transmission and the shifter first. What you described could keep the starter from activating in the first place.

new to the 4.7 game but I had trouble with my neutral safety switch in a couple old trucks. bypassed it and never had problems.

This is a v8 so the starter is deep under the intake manifold, the v6 starters are accessible easily if you are talking about the v6. $800 canadian so like $500 freedom bucks

If the truck is moving while in park and the starter is not working I'd immediately look and the shifter linkage. Probably a worn bushing. Most likely even though the shifter shows it being in park it probably isn't all the way in due to excess motion in the shift cable. This would explain both problems.

it was sort of what i was suspecting, it was the neutral safety switch apparently kept giving power to the starter. As i mentioned about sometimes the car needing to shift into N or go through the gears to start
