I think a wheel balance issue. I have had a vibration problem at around 50 mph, after balancing 4 wheels with Road Force Measurement

As I have previously posted: 12/09/2005

[When you hear the moan/drone turn off the audio system. Check to see if you feel a slight vibration in the steering wheel (not side to side motion caused by wheel shimmy), vibration in door pull handles or a slight vibration in your right heal or in the accelerator.
The sound/vibration is created by engine harmonics setting up a vibration in the drive train. Toyota has fixed it in the Lexus GX-470 but apparently not enough people have complained to Toyota to encourage them to fix the 4Runners. Dealer can do nothing because there is no Toyota TSB issued.

Toyota has officially informed me, in a meeting and test drive two weeks ago, that this type of vibration along with the so called "clunk" of the driveshaft is a "normal operating characteristic".
In fact both were present in the new 06' 4Runner that the Regional Customer Service Manager was driving so I did not have to give a long drawn out explaination!! That person did not know if Toyota was working to correct the problem. Repeated letters to Toyota about it have gone unanswered because it is Toyotas policy not to reply in writing but to go through verbal conversations with the Regional Customer Service Managers.

So I guess that the 03-06 4Runners are Official Clunkers...]
I was left with the very definate impression from the Regional Rep that not enough customers are formally complaining to Toyota for them to do anything about it! Because so much else about the 4Runner is so good, most seem to be willing to accept it or take a brush off from the dealer.

well then toyota can sell me a gx 470 and take this thing back! I have an appt on wed to have this looked at!!! but I will not put up with this,,,, thanks for all the replys and I will keep you all updated....mike

Toyota has fixed it in the Lexus GX-470 but apparently..........

MrTOM,

Could you provide some additional info what this statement means? IE what was done to fix it in the GX-470?

yep I would love to know how they did this? so I can tell my dealer or I may be getting rid of the 4r I dont want to but cant live with this its driving me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:bash:

I guess this is much more of a severe problem than we all thought. My vibration was not so bad as I wanted to get rid of the truck....that's pretty drastic of a problem then.

My vibration has seemed to pretty much gone away after 300 mile's. I guess Im lucky.

Its funny but this thread made me realize that it is still not completely gone after 10K miles on my truck. It is much less and I guess I just got used to it. Sometimes ignorance is bilss

thats not funny and that is EXACTLY what I dont want to happen to me (geting used to it) but yes I want to know what they do to the 470 to band aid this problem? man Im not very happy right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

V8 owner -- no vibration

Sorry to hear about your experience. I've had my V8 for about 1 year exactly. I've never experienced what you and others are, gratefully.

But, I would be very upset if I did. Here is at least 1 other thread on this, and I think there are others if you search this forum.

Also, in TX we have I think a law that allows us to return a car, no q's asked, within a certain number of days. So, I'd certainly use that leverage -- need to check laws in your state -- probably a website to do so.

Seriously?? If so, wow....that must cause some shitstorms!

Here, once you sign the papers.....it's your car. Sometimes the dealer may take it back out of good will, but they don't have to.

FWIW, I have not experienced this problem in any of the V8 4Runners I've driven....hopefully the fix is easy.

I found this

A number of first time GX owners, and myself, experienced a mild, but noticeable, driveline vibration being transmitted up through the steering column under light acceleration at highway speeds. I touched base with a local Lexus service department to confirm the compliant. There had only been a few, and customers were put in a holding pattern awaiting a repair from Toyota/Lexus engineering. The next call was to Brad Nelson of Lexus Public Relations. He confirmed that Toyota engineers in Japan are working on the problem, and have already traveled to the U.S. in order to experience the condition on American roadways. More than one year later, a modification has been released by means of Lexus Technical Service Bulletin number ST004-04, entitled

so that is a band aid for the real problem wich it sounds like a harmonic problem with the engine am I off base with this ? so they just cover up the problem:confused:

Or transmission, but sounds like a band aid to me, but why they have not addressed this already with new production years is beyond my understanding. Even adding the band aid would have helped.

Mine is not bad at all and seemed to lessen. I never thought it was bad enough to really ever bother me and I probably would have mentioned it when I took it on for an oil change , but I personally would'nt made a big deal if it was fixed or not because it was so slight (that's just me). My 4R is so damn tight right now being this new that it's hard to tell.

It's so hard to tell what other people vehicle's problem's are on here. You seem to have a much worse problem if you don't even want to drive the truck. You know how it is , you can describe it but I can't feel it , I can only imagine what something so severe would feel like....not good.

I also have had other vehicles with minor problem's and I'm the type of person that think's & believe's certain thing's are normal. This is a mechanical item that has a lot of metal on metal moving parts , I personally don't ever expect any vehicle to be perfect.

On that note what the hell is the dealer telling you ?? I would also recommend test driving a few other's on the lot to see if you have a common problem with other's. It does not sound like alot of us are having that severe of a problem. make sure you get them to take care of you on this and don't back off. Keep us posted and don't hink I was trying to make light of your situation , bacause I was not.

Just try to decompress and take a step back , I know it's a MAJOR issue , please don't get yourself sick over it , it will get resolved........or you can drive it through the showroom front window....lol..........Hang in there !!

* The Lexus folks have issued TSB's for the harmonic drone and also the clunking. I willl look up the TSB numbers and post them.
* Be advised, just becaue there is a TSB for the Lexus GX470 does NOT mean that your TOYOTA service department can apply it to the 4Runner. The Toyota dealer needs a Toyota TSB specifically for the 4Runner to do the work. Their hands are tied by Toyota Corporate policies and decisions. Also, Lexus part numbers are different than the Toyota part numbers.
*I have done a bit if resesrch on this as both situations are very annoying and in times of difficult traffic situations can actually cause one to do something they would not normally do. IE; dangerous.
*It appears that the Lexus TSB's do not ALWAYS fix the problem on a permanent basis. Since there are fewer GX470 being sold than the 4Runners and the TSB's are not really working all the time,Toyota may be reluctant to issue a TSB on the higher volume Runner. It would just bring in more customer dissatisfaction than already exists.
*I have written two letters to the CEO of Toyota USA Sales. I want to know why Toyota was not attempting to fix the problem and Lexus was. It gives the impression that Toyota thinks more of the Lexus customer than the Toyota customer. Neither letter was answered in a written form. I was told it is not Toyotas policy to answer in writing but does so through Regional Customer Service Reps. Since the Reps 06' had the exact same problems as my 03' I was told they are "normal operating characteristics" and nothing would be done!
*Bottom line is Toyota is NOT getting enough formal complaints about the problems. I know it sounds like I am harping on it but Talk Forums can only do so much and in a lot of cases are an outlet for frustrations. But most will not commit themselves to a letter with their name on it or a documented complaint to Toyota.
