[When you hear the moan/drone turn off the audio system. Check to see if you feel a slight vibration in the steering wheel (not side to side motion caused by wheel shimmy), vibration in door pull handles or a slight vibration in your right heal or in the accelerator.
The sound/vibration is created by engine harmonics setting up a vibration in the drive train. Toyota has fixed it in the Lexus GX-470 but apparently not enough people have complained to Toyota to encourage them to fix the 4Runners. Dealer can do nothing because there is no Toyota TSB issued.
Toyota has officially informed me, in a meeting and test drive two weeks ago, that this type of vibration along with the so called "clunk" of the driveshaft is a "normal operating characteristic".
In fact both were present in the new 06' 4Runner that the Regional Customer Service Manager was driving so I did not have to give a long drawn out explaination!! That person did not know if Toyota was working to correct the problem. Repeated letters to Toyota about it have gone unanswered because it is Toyotas policy not to reply in writing but to go through verbal conversations with the Regional Customer Service Managers.
So I guess that the 03-06 4Runners are Official Clunkers...]
I was left with the very definate impression from the Regional Rep that not enough customers are formally complaining to Toyota for them to do anything about it! Because so much else about the 4Runner is so good, most seem to be willing to accept it or take a brush off from the dealer.

MrTOM,
Could you provide some additional info what this statement means? IE what was done to fix it in the GX-470?
Falls said:I guess this is much more of a severe problem than we all thought. My vibration was not so bad as I wanted to get rid of the truck....that's pretty drastic of a problem then.
My vibration has seemed to pretty much gone away after 300 mile's. I guess Im lucky.

Spider5 said:Its funny but this thread made me realize that it is still not completely gone after 10K miles on my truck. It is much less and I guess I just got used to it. Sometimes ignorance is bilss

Seriously?? If so, wow....that must cause some shitstorms!Whoknows said:
Also, in TX we have I think a law that allows us to return a car, no q's asked, within a certain number of days. So, I'd certainly use that leverage -- need to check laws in your state -- probably a website to do so.

A number of first time GX owners, and myself, experienced a mild, but noticeable, driveline vibration being transmitted up through the steering column under light acceleration at highway speeds. I touched base with a local Lexus service department to confirm the compliant. There had only been a few, and customers were put in a holding pattern awaiting a repair from Toyota/Lexus engineering. The next call was to Brad Nelson of Lexus Public Relations. He confirmed that Toyota engineers in Japan are working on the problem, and have already traveled to the U.S. in order to experience the condition on American roadways. More than one year later, a modification has been released by means of Lexus Technical Service Bulletin number ST004-04, entitled

MrTom said:* The Lexus folks have issued TSB's for the harmonic drone and also the clunking. I willl look up the TSB numbers and post them.
* Be advised, just becaue there is a TSB for the Lexus GX470 does NOT mean that your TOYOTA service department can apply it to the 4Runner. The Toyota dealer needs a Toyota TSB specifically for the 4Runner to do the work. Their hands are tied by Toyota Corporate policies and decisions. Also, Lexus part numbers are different than the Toyota part numbers.
*I have done a bit if resesrch on this as both situations are very annoying and in times of difficult traffic situations can actually cause one to do something they would not normally do. IE; dangerous.
*It appears that the Lexus TSB's do not ALWAYS fix the problem on a permanent basis. Since there are fewer GX470 being sold than the 4Runners and the TSB's are not really working all the time,Toyota may be reluctant to issue a TSB on the higher volume Runner. It would just bring in more customer dissatisfaction than already exists.
*I have written two letters to the CEO of Toyota USA Sales. I want to know why Toyota was not attempting to fix the problem and Lexus was. It gives the impression that Toyota thinks more of the Lexus customer than the Toyota customer. Neither letter was answered in a written form. I was told it is not Toyotas policy to answer in writing but does so through Regional Customer Service Reps. Since the Reps 06' had the exact same problems as my 03' I was told they are "normal operating characteristics" and nothing would be done!
*Bottom line is Toyota is NOT getting enough formal complaints about the problems. I know it sounds like I am harping on it but Talk Forums can only do so much and in a lot of cases are an outlet for frustrations. But most will not commit themselves to a letter with their name on it or a documented complaint to Toyota.
