2006 4-Runner XSP V6 - P0456 Engine Code

Hi guys,

I've been a life long fan of the Toyota 4-runner and this weekend I picked up my first one, a white 2006 4-Runner XSP V6. The XSP model comes with the 20x8.5 Enkeis wheels, Borla dual exhaust, carbon fiber dash, and some other misc upgrades. So far it seems like a nice SUV.

While pulling out of my driveway today, I notice that the dash lit up with the check engine light as well as VSC Trac and Traction Slip indicator light. I hooked up my code scanner and got P0456 which looks to be related to a leak in the evaporative system.

I read that you should start off with the most common and obvious which is a replacement gas cap. I'll start off with that and clear the codes to see if that cures it. I'll also do a lookover of the lines running to the evaporative canister to make sure those are good before moving on to the more complicated items.

What are some other common culprits of this code on our cars?

Also, the obvious question... While doing a search I noticed that quite a few people reported that this code comes with the VSC lights. How are these even remotely related??

For that particular DTC, a loose or worn/dried out gas cap is the most likely cause. Take your fingernail and press the rubber on the gas cap, it should be firm with a little give; if it feels very hard the cap might be due for replacement (the sometimes unscrew themselves slightly when they get that hard.)

Basically an MIL On condition means that an OBDII mandated test has failed and a DTC has been stored for that particular test (i.e. P0456- Test for EVAP Small Leak has failed) OBDII is mandated by the government to inlcude anything that is related to Emissions (which typically aside from a handful of EVAP and slightly unrelated DTCs in someway affects engine performance.) Toyota being conservative basically said, "since we set the MIL because the engine is not working up to snuff; we can't reliably use the VSC/TRAC system since it needs the engine as well (VSC & TRAC manipulate ABS & Engine output to provide stability) so we'll shut those down to be safe every time an MIL is set.
