If you can afford the slightly higher initial purchase price, the minor difference in fuel costs and your use of the 4Runner requires it, get the V8. Otherwise, the V6 is a good choice.

It's a lot different now than it was 3 years ago when a V8 was a premium over the V6 and only had 235hp and today many V8's sell for less than V6's with the factory rebates and have more power. I couldn't justify the extra cost of the V8 three years ago and I'm happy with my choice. The V6 offers more than enough power and is great on gas.

In the end, it doesn't matter what anybody says or tries to convince you to do. It's your money, get the model as you see fit for your means.

Thought this would be an appropriate thread to ask this is...

To anyone with experience...what kind of numbers should I expect from a v6 with 285/70s...as compared to a V8 with the same. I found a great deal on a V8, but I am favoring the V6 for the better hwy mileage. How much would 285s affect the v6 mileage?

Yet another horse that has been beat to death.....

I've seen as high as 20.9 out of my 4Runner on the highway. On that tank of fuel, I reached speeds as high as 110mph. I always calculate my mileage, not let the trip computer do it for me.

The lowest I've gotten has been 13mpg while towing a 5,000lb trailer with a car on it.

On average, doing 80-85mph, I get around 17.5-18mpg on the highway. I am NOT light-footed at all with this vehicle. If you drive more moderately, I'd expect 19-20, maybe even 21 without using A/C on flat ground.

#2: Resale on a bigger engine is tastier.

Not from what I've seen lately. It seems that the V6 model has a better resale value, probably because it is in higher demand than the V8 models (because of high gas prices) in the resale market.

The proof is in the pudding whenever you see Toyota discount the V8 4Runner higher than the V6 4Runner. If my memory is correct, Toyota offered a higher customer rebate for the V8 more than once in the past year.

That is true. Right after I bought my V6 they came out with V8 rebates that made the V8 vs V6 a wash on inital cost. Knowing what I know now (no real mpg penalty), and with that rebate, I would have bought the V8.

v8 - great sound, better power, better towing capacity.

v6 - 2wd option (for handling). Slightly better range/tank (critical for me). Better resale in my area. Even $300/year * 10 years (planned ownership) = $3000.

If you are all about towing >5K lbs, there are probably better choices out there then a v8 runner. I personally won't max out the tow rating very frequently.

I plan on "idling" the engine allot in the winter, I wonder what the mpg diff would look like between the 2 engines for that purpose.

For a vehicle that CAN comfortably tow >5,000lbs AND be a comfortable and highly maneuverable daily driver, the 4Runner can't be beat. There is NOTHING out there that does all of it as well as the 4Runner. I did a lot of shopping before I purchased this vehicle.

ALL models of 4Runner (V6 or V8) can be purchased with a 2WD option... Why do so many people think that 2WD V8 models do not exist??? There are some of us that do not need to plow snow in the winter and do not need 4WD for dirt/gravel roads (about the only 'offroading' I'm interested in doing with this vehicle).

I believe what they are referring to is the fact that the 4WD V6 has the option of being driven in 2WD, while the 4WD V8 is full-time.

Depends where you are I suppose....around here you could never (ever) sell a used V6 for more than a V8.
