Hi Everyone,
I am thinking of purchasing a new 2008 4Runner Limited Edition V6 4x4, and I was wondering what's the bottom price a dealer is willing to sell for. Here is the MSRP for the 4Runner with the following accessories:

Vehicle Base Price: $36975
Destination Fee: $685
Carpet Mats: $199
Details for Option D - $3,355

- 50 state emissions (FE)
- Daytime Running Lights (DRL) (RL)
- JBL

Use Edmunds or KBB to tell you what invoice price is on that truck. That's about the price (give or take a couple hundred dollars) you should pay before any rebates. The cash rebate, if you choose that rather than cheap financing, is icing on the cake and just lowers the price further.

MSRP is irrelevant.

Go back to the dealer with an exact number in mind to negotiate. Don't go in there thinking "$x above/below invoice", or you'll get into a debate about the definition of "invoice" and the price will go up.

After the rebate, how much should I pay for this SUV? any help is appreciated.

There is a spreadsheet you can use on my site. 3-5% over dealer cost is not only fair but very easily obtainable, BEFORE rebate.

I got mine at 1% below invoice.

The company that I work for had a fleet agreement with Chrysler (1% below invoice), I took a print out of that program and brought to my local Toyota dealer. I asked if they would match that offer as I was debating between buying a Grand Cherokee or a 4Runner (I owned 2 GCs for 7 years).

At first I was told that it was impossible, I thanked them and walked out. They called my cell before I left the parking lot and agreed to sell at 1% below invoice (I got the rebate too on top of that)!!!

I completely agree with J.A. that you need to do your research BEFORE you set your foot inside a dealership. You need to know EXACTLY what options you want on your truck; you can search local inventory and find out what they have in stock. With that info you can figure out the INVOICE.
But more importantly you need to know HOW MUCH you are willing to pay for your truck, and that is the number that you stick with. Be prepared to walk away if the dealer is not willing to sell at your price; the dealer WILL call you back.

GOOD LUCK!

Actually, the invoice prices in KBB and Edmunds are wrong in that they don't reflect advertising and certain other costs peculiar to Toyota.

We managed a good deal without the hassle by using the Costco program. With a $1k rebate at the time (November '07) it came out to $500 under Toyota's invoice.

Another thing to consider is the conversion factor of the yen to the dollar. The 4Runner is 100% contented and built in Japan. Our 4Runner was built and priced in August '07 when the dollar was worth 124 yen. Now the dollar only fetches 109 yen (as of this posting), a 12% decline in the dollar. If Toyota hasn't raised prices since August, anything close to "invoice" would be a great deal.

I got about a grand under invoice with the reabate (~5k off sticker) for my 08 Sport but I traded my 03 Taco TRD so I might have gotten hosed there. They'll get you one way or another. Seems like they are going to make more on my used truck then they ever could on a new vehicle anyway.

I agree with the others. Do your homework, check online inventories, have a solid price (not payment) in mind for a specific in stock vehicle, and call around to various dealerships to get pricing. Work it out in advance over the phone or through the internet sales person. Don't even go to the dealer if they don't have your vehicle in stock. It helps to get a pre-approved loan from the credit union or your bank so you don't have to negotiate rates as well.

Good luck.

3-5% is to much, and I am a salesman @ a Toyota dealership. Edmunds and KBB do not have accurate invoice $$ due to regional costs passed on to the dealer, but they are close depending on dealer stock and demand you should be able to buy it for under invoice. Having said that it all depends on your market. We are giving FJ's away but other parts of the country are getting full list.PM when you pick out the Runner you want to buy

Invoice minus the $1000 rebate.
They can eat $100 of holdback.
If not, go $100 over invoice minus the 1k rebate for $900 under invoice.
Never pay over invoice.
However it may be too early in the model year for the dealer to be dumping Runners yet.
I scored a V8 Sport 4WD for $2400 under invoice recently.
