2008 4wd V6 gas milage

I have an '06 V6 2WD and I get 17.5-18 city and 20 highway. I thought it would have been better. I check mileage by hand (don't rely on the dash for calculations) every tank since new and now have about 44,000 miles. I have only broken 20 on two tanks. The first time I broke 20 was the 1st tank - so it is not a 'break-in' issue. I was babying it for break in. At that time I was real excited thinking I got 20 and it is only going to get better - NOT! The second time was at about 18000 miles.
For the record, I drive pretty hard. I have kept Mobil1 synthetic in it since 3000 miles and change oil and filter at 5000 mile intervals. From what I understand, 4WD versions get about the same since it is only a pretty minor weight penalty and you operate in 2WD mode most of the time anyway. I kind of regret not getting 4WD.
For what it is worth, in spite of the somwhat dissapointing mileage, I love my T4R and would buy one again.

Not trying to sound like a wise-acre, but generally, going by what the sticker says will give you a good ballpark figure of what to expect. If it were modded or something, I could understand a question like this, but brand new and bone stock??
sbbamafan - How can you expect good mileage when you "drive pretty hard." Go easy on the gas and you should be able to break 20 regularly (pending that you do mostly highway travels. All city mileage will kill MPG's).

For future reference, Toyota.com, autos.msn.com, etc. all have MPG figures for all models. For real world results, people keep a tab of their MPG figures on www.fueleconomy.gov

Just rented one for the weekend (Friday to Monday) and did 1,596 miles through CA (Tahoe, Shasta, SF Bay, etc.) and averaged 20 MPG.
There was little variance on highway (up to 90MPH) versus hills versus city driving.
This also included hauling a 350# snowblower and several chunks of wood.

I've only calculated my fuel economy once ever. It was driving from Lake Placid NY to NYC (about a 5 hour drive) and did the entire trip in less than one tank. I averaged 23 MPG as calculated after filling the tank when I arrived. Not too bad, considering that my 4Runner was loaded up with ski gear on the roof and 4 people and their gear inside.
When I had my V6 I could get a hair over 21 on the hwy with judicious use of cruise control. For a stretch I was getting about 19 calculated in town, but that was kind of longer intervals without lights almost hwy really. You can best the EPA estimates, I have in every vehicle quite easily. Driving style is the biggest impact of MPG, if you drive like a granny and put the cruise at 62 on the hwy youll be laughing all the way to the bank.

My 03 4Runner 4x4 limited V6 gets around 17 city and 25 last week on a 200 mile round tripe drive to the coast. I usually get 23 on the highway though. So it seems these 4Runners get what they are rated to get for the most part.
Keep it tuned, air filters clean and check the tires. I also use Mobile 1. Now...If I put my snow tires with studs on it and drive in 4X4 in the winter here, I get about 16.5 city to 20 highway.
