2008 Changing Plugs

My daughter has a 2008 4 Runner with 40k miles -I always taught her to be sure she looks at the manual etc. to keep up on required maintenance -which she does.
Amy call the other day and indicated that she needs to have the plugs changed which, based on the miles, I thought was strange, but I see that this is a regular requirement based on the original plugs not being the long life type.
I told her I would look at changing them for her, but as always, asked her to get a repair manual for me and then I'll work on it, especially since I had not changed plugs on an engine with individual coil packs before.
When I looked at the Haynes Repair manual, it indicated that if you have a V6you have to remove the upper plenum intake etc. to change the plugs -is that right?

It was funny after during my personal wrenching since 1964 to have no idea where the plugs were after looking at the V6 engine. With the good posted info I saw I was about 15 yrs behind since I kept my used V6 1993 Explorer 15 yrs before recently getting an 07 T4R. It all flowed well w/o a favorite Haynes. I might have taken one short–cut but had two concerns.

1. I question gapping the plugs that are factory set unless you drop one vs the old gapping or checks?

2. Why is the factory recommended 30,000 so low when they know the plugs will last longer?

3. The needle nose pliers were very handy vs a must releasing the connections on the coil pacts.

That's a great writeup and the one I followed when I did mine. The only difference is that I used iridium plugs because they're rated to last 100k miles. If you do decide to use the iridium they're supposed to come pre-gapped. I found mine a bit off so I had to bend them a little. You just want to be careful bending them not to break off the iridium tip or you'll have to trash the plug.
