2008 Rims On a 1998 ?

My stock height 1998 currently has 265/70R16 on it, a good friend upgraded her Jeep and has a set of BFG all terrain 275/70R18's with 1,000 miles I can have for basically free(doing some work on her house= free for me). I found a set of 2008 18" 4runner wheels which my research shows for that year is a
7.5 x 18", 6x139.7mm with a 106mm center bore while the 1998 shows a
7.0 x 16" 6x139.7mm with a 106mm center bore. The new tires would be ~1.5" larger diameter than the current ones I measured at ~31" tall. Two local tire shops said this won't work; they won't fit & they aren't compatible. There's plenty of clearance for the 1.5" larger tires and the rims have the same bolt pattern & offset but 1/2" width difference. Am I missing something ?

Those tires are nominally 33.2" in diameter - which is about 1" too large to clear in front without a bit of cutting/clearancing. The wheels themselves will be fine. You might also need a spacer in the front to clear the upper a-arm, depending on the wheel offset.

32.6" is for 265/70/18. Those are nominal sizes though, and different tires can be slightly larger or smaller than the stated size. Even with slightly smaller 265's, you'll still have clearance issues.

265/75-16, 265/70-17 and 265/65-18 (all 31.6") are generally considered the largest you can fit without modifications.

I have 265/70-17's on my 4Runner and I get very slight rubbing on the back of the front wheel wells - that will be able to be fixed with an alignment (added caster).
