Wow, Hyundai is really trying to jump into the luxury market with the Genesis: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/a...l.home.photopanel..1.*#09hyundaigenesisint500

What is it?
2009 Hyundai Genesis

What's special about it?
There are only two production cars in the world with a Lexicon-branded audio system. One is the $360,000 Rolls Royce Phantom; the other is the 2009 Hyundai Genesis. The Genesis will not cost $360,000. In fact, it will start below $30,000 when it goes on sale this summer.

For that bargain price, you'll get a near-luxury sedan with all the value you would expect in a Hyundai. Base models will use a 3.3-liter V6 that delivers 268 horsepower and 233 pound-feet of torque, while the midrange Genesis gets a 3.8-liter V6 rated at 290 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque. Both use a standard six-speed Aisin automatic transmission.

Competing with more expensive European sedans takes more than a V6, so the top-of-the-line Genesis will offer Hyundai's first-ever V8. The new 4.6-liter engine generates an impressive 368 hp and 324 lb-ft of torque, and uses the same ZF six-speed automatic found in many BMW and Jaguar sedans. Hyundai says the combination is enough to get the V8 Genesis from zero to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds running on regular unleaded gas.

A new rear-wheel-drive chassis helps deliver all that power to the ground. It gets help from front and rear suspensions that use a sophisticated five-link design and the car's 53/47 front-to-rear weight distribution. Hyundai also says that the use of high-tensile steel gives the Genesis higher torsional rigidity and a lighter structure than the BMW 5 Series.

Hyundai is hoping to give its new flagship sedan an even bigger boost in the cachet department by offering high-end options similar to that of more expensive European sport sedans. In addition to the 17-speaker Lexicon audio system, the Hyundai Genesis will offer adaptive xenon headlights, heated and cooled front seats, iPod and USB audio inputs, adaptive cruise control, a factory HD Radio receiver and even reflective leather on the steering wheel to keep it cool in direct sunlight.

With a wheelbase of 115.6 inches, the Genesis has more room between the wheels than both the Infiniti M and Lexus GS sedans. It's also roughly 2 inches wider, so interior passenger space should be generous. There's the usual array of front, side and side curtain airbags along with electronic active head restraints, a feature Hyundai points out is only offered on select BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz models.

What's Edmunds' take?
It has all the right specs and a competitive price, but it's the little things that separate real luxury cars from the posers. We'll see if the Genesis has what it takes after some time behind the wheel.

We finally have the details and official pics of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis, the RWD luxury automobile that promises to challenge $60,000 luxury autos at half the price (no shock, it looks like the Genesis we already showed you). The big news here is features. Fully loaded the Genesis sports the Tau 4.6 liter DOHC V8 good for 368 horsepower and 324 lb. ft of torque mated to a ZF 6-speed transmission good for a sub-6.0 second 0-60 mph time. Like the Lexus GS, there's a five-link independent suspension to keep all that newly found power pointed in the right direciton. The car will also feature a bevy of state-of-the-art navigational and audio equipment tied together with an 8-inch LCD display. Impressive, also, is the list of admitted competitors: Lexus GS, Infiniti M, BMW 5-series, Chrysler 300, Mercedes E series and Pontiac G8. Full details and press release below the jump.

Not sure about the long term value and reliability, but from these pics and stats, i think that Hyundai has a winner here! It looks great and the interior is plenty nice!

My opinion of Hyundai is you get a lot for your money at first blush, but they always seem heavier than they need to be, the suspension and handling is not up to standards set by others and they are more thirsty than they need to be.

I think if you want to impress your friends buy a Mercedes, if you want to show your friends your smart, buy a Lexus. So what does buying a Hyundai say to your friends???

Strangely, there is no Smart Key which is the "in-thing" these days, esp. given this car is a 2009 model.

I would imagine that this car can be a steal if Hyundai keeps it around $35K or at most, under $40K.

copycat styling... no one in the >40k market is going to shop Hyundai... Maybe they will spin off a luxury label?

Many people said this in the early 1990s with Acura and Lexus (and later Infiniti)...and look at where they are at now. Hyundai is the "luxury" brand of Kia...similar to Lexus is to Toyota. Of course, Hyundai has been average at best with their current offerings, but this new sedan looks good on paper at least.

I definitely wouldn't put Hyundai on the same level as Lexus and mercedes, etc. But like Thai said, give it some time. The newer Hyundai's don't look bad, especially the ones that are releasing the next 1-2 years. Part of it is just the brand name, Hyundai, they have a lot of work to do if they want to redeem their name.

I will acquiesce to the Acura / Lexus analogy, but I just can't get those late '80's Hyundai Excel ads for $3995 out of my head. When I see their new models such as the Elantra, Azera and Genesis, I am amazed at the progress they have made. Hyundai has the advantage of low manufacturing costs, which will assist in launching new product, and I am sure they cut themselves a deal on shipping.

All in all, they will have to mirror Toyota's marketing. How will they attract buyers to showrooms featuring economy and near luxury models. It's all about appeal.

I saw a concept of this vehicle at the NY Auto Show a few years back and I was really impressed. I honestly did not know it was a Hyundai until a representative started talking to me about the car. They told me that in the future, Hyundai wants to have cars that will compete with Lexus.

I am thinking they retailed for $4995 when they came out in 1985. With air, automatic and few other options they would creep up to $8000. Quite a few people I know bought one, unforunately they lasted for about 80 to 100 thousand miles and that was it.

They were one of the best selling new brands on the market and I think that hurt them more than anything else. I mean when Toyota first came out and did poorly, no one cared, since they sold so few.

OH!
I saw one today! I tried to take a picture but it was raining and all I got was my windshield wiper. I'm sure they live locally, I will have my camera phone ready next time!

spend the $30k on a used Lexus

I owned a Hyunday Sonota, it was heavy and the gas milage was poor. Insurance was high and replacement parts are not cheap. I finnaly traded it for the 4 Runner. In the long run its better to buy a used Lexus, Toyota or Honda. Try to sell a used Hyundai or trade it in and you wont get hardly anything for it. The Genisis is a good looking car...

So the headlights are Acura RL, the taillights are BMW, the side profile especially around the windows looks like an Infiniti M, and the interior looks like a mix of BMW and Infiniti. I guess they are figuring out that to be successful you have to copy the successful manufacturers haha!

I saw some photoshops of it on another site and it looked better dropped on big wheels. :biggrin2:

Doesn't that remind you of early Lexus vehicles? ;):
