2010 4-Runner Liftgate Struts

Yesterday morning my liftgate was fine. Last night it seems both struts went. The gate is heavy and will not stay up by itself. It slams shut if I am not holding it.

Is it common for both struts to go at the same time?

Are they hard to replace?

Where is the best place to buy them. Toyota wants $160 each.

Thanks for any advice or help.

Sorry to hear it.

I doubt that both failed, but it's possible. It may be that one alone can't keep it up.

Is the vehicle still under warranty?

You may be able to find a used pair. Try a body shop.

Good luck!

Warranty should cover this issue. Some others on here have had the same issue as you.

If you want, I think Ducmonsta or Ride sells the Gobi Heavy Duty Struts for the liftgate.

Mine went at 20K ... covered under warranty, no problem

You don't know that both are blown - one would be enough to not hold up the tailgate. If you are under warranty it is covered. Only other option I know of are the heavy duty ones offered by Gobi. Have them on mine and they do work.

Thanks guys.

It is out of warranty by 500 miles so I'll look at Gobi. I'll pull them to see which one is bad.

BTW Toyota lists two different parts numbers. One for cars with the JBL sound system and one for those without.

I looked at mine and cannot see why there would be a difference.

Mine has the JBL. Does it really make a difference?

Thanks again

Only 500 miles? I would still take it into the Dealer, tell you have been having "concerns" and then they finally failed. They may still take care of it for you. Seems more then just a few folks have been having this problem over the last year or so. I sense a new TSB in the future.....be safe.

Are you talking about parts 68908-0W100 and 68907-0W100? It's just left/right based on my repair order. Search, online, you can get them for $125 each.

Yes. The last 4 numbers on the list I found were 0W090.

I'll try looking on line for them or the Gobi.

Mine went out at 26k, right along with a leak on one of my suspension struts. Both covered under warranty. I think it's a defect since the only complaints I see on here about the lift gate strut is from 2010 owners, for the most part at least.

TFS?

I'm wondering if the difference in part numbers would mean that Toyota realized there was a problem and they are using a new / different part than the original part.

Nope. Repair invoice says:
QTY 1 - 68908-0W100 "STAY SUB-ASSY. BA"
QTY 1 - 68907-0W100 "STAY SUB-ASSY. BA"

Mine went out 1K miles past warranty, what's with Toyota? My last vehicle a Pathfinder lasted for 12 years. They are not covering it and want 196 per strut!!!
