2010 4runner limited gas mileage

Just wondering what is typical Gas mileage I should be expecting on my 2010 4runner. My previous 2004 always averaged 18-19 mpg. My recently purchased 2010 is getting 15-16 under pretty much same conditions. This is the average readout on my dash. Both generations show typically same gas mileage ratings.

Mine is probably getting about that much when I calculate it. The dash readouts seem to be a bit generous, though, meaning that if you actually calculate tha mileage it may be a little bit less than on the readout. FWIW, I got 17 (actual calculated) while driving between 75 and 80 on the highway the other day. I don't think I can do any better than that especially on winter gas.

Mine is right around 15-17 mpg city driving over the last couple months. The computer is pretty much dead on with hand calculated mileage. Winter has been one of the coldest here in years, so it's pretty much what I had expected. My last 4Runner ('06 w/V8) would have been around 2-3 mpg less in this weather. I'm content with the mileage at this point.

with stock tires, I use to av 17.5 - 18.
Post 275's and different rims.. 15.9
Post installing shrockworks sliders 16.9 , YES thats correct!!!

I have no clue if it's coincidence or the sliders are breaking up the wind somewhere??

Yeah, there are a ton of threads on the subject.
IMO the computer is extremely accurate compared to calculated, more accurate in fact.
In 70 comparisons, my average hand calculated mpgs is currently 21.39 and the average of computer MPG readings is 21.4. YMMV.

My thoughts exactly! I know I have zero scientific proof but when ever I compare hand calculations to the computer, it's always pretty close (within like +/-0.25MPG). I would imagine the computer just keeping track of how much gas it squirts out per mile...shouldn't be hard if it knows the duty cycle and capacity of each injector

On the other hand, hand calculations leaves much room for error, like how full was it when you started, how full is it when the nozzle stops at "full", etc.

the sad part, since its a v6 everyone expects awesome mpg. throw a v8 badge on this and the complaints about mpg pretty much go away.

granted i expected at least window sticker mpg in the city, but i didnt fool myself thinking it will get that all the time.

if you want mpg, any NON BoF 4x4/awd gas suv will get you better mpg.

if you want a BoF 4x4/awd suv, expect the mid teen's for mpg (actual), and that will be the norm across any make pretty much, unless you drive highway all the time and hardly do city/off road cycles.

I completely agree. I'm perfectly content with getting 20mpg on the highway in stock form. It's very reasonable for an SUV of it's size and weight.

Gas hit $3.65 per gallon this week...noticed she drove the yaris today. I'm laughing inside about the pennies she is actually saving this week versus her weekend shopping rituals.

i made that mistake years ago thinking of getting rid of my 2004 v8 sport and moving to a v6 hyundai sonta. yeah saved $$ on gas, but it really didnt offset the long term. short term i saved about $20/wk in gas, but when i look back i broke even when you take in every $$ spent on the 4R vs the sonata.

i was never really happy driving the sonata or the legacy at the end of having each vehicle, wasnt truly happy until i got back into my 2014 LE.

that happiness of actually enjoying driving a vehicle years after you bought it is still priceless and doesnt reflect until you miss it regardless of the payment or pain you endure to get back to what you want/love.


ie: the warden only gets between 9-13mpg in the winter in her tacoma, but man is she happier = she isnt on my ass

Pretty much same thing with my stock 2010 TE... I expected at least 17/22mpg the way I drive but meh.

The ECU calculates fuel mass injected, but has to make an assumption on fuel density to calculate gallons consumed, so you could get an error there. I've found the computer readout to agree pretty closely to the fuel pump, but I haven't compared them over several tanks of gas to see how they fare long term.

The EPA test doesn't differentiate between the 4WD LE and 4WD SR5/TE. Same exact mileage from their tests (ie 21.2997 for highway).
