2010 4runner spy photos w/ NO CAMO!!!

Right now, I am no overly impressed, but not overly dissapointed. I mean they could of done worse.

I don't know guys, I kind of like the green one. The white one has an odd look to it but it's hard to tell with those pics. Maybe it's the angle or something....? I'll reserve my judgement until we get real full pics of them.

I remember when the 4th gen came out, it was quite the departure from the 3rd and I definately wasn't a fan at first, but it did grow on me. Now I really love it. I imagine it'll be the same as this one.

And, with Toyota stating that they're going back to their roots, and now with actual evidence with things like the 4x4 shifter instead of a knob, mast antenna, boxy-er looks, trail editions etc. at least they're attempting to keep it to how it started. It could have been way worse, they could've followed the steps of other manufactures and made it a bloated, unibody, over priced mall crawler instead.... I'll take back to it's roots please.

I could POSSIBLY see myself pleasantly suprised IF and ONLY IF the 5th gen was about 7/8-scale the size of the 4th gen. Then I could potentially tolerate the boxy, more upright styling. That could be cool. Then I could believe in the "Returning to its Roots" mantra. That could finally be change I could believe in.

I'll tell you what else really chaps my @$$ and that is Toyota's use of that silver plastic on the interior again.

The silver parts on the interior of my 4th gen are the first and easiest to get scratched, dirty, or discolored. The interior of my Limited looks perfect, almost new, except for the silver parts.

Do these people even question long term owners? because they should. I've had mine since Dec '02, I should have gotten a questionnaire.

2010 4Runner returns to its roots

To paraphrase a poster on the yotatech.com forums: Whatever happened to the 2010 4Runner "returning to its roots"? It did. It fell off the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.



Now I know why Toyota put so much camo on 2010 4Runner in all those spy pics, and why it tried to put a total embargo on any pics without the camo. I actually like new 4Runner better with the camo on, but I don't think Toyota will offer that as an option when ordering.

As for the lack of projector headlights and cheaper-looking interior, I think that might be a result of the current exchange rates. The 4Runner is made in Japan and the Yen is strong, while the the Dollar is weak and getting weaker. Multi-billion dollar bailouts and multi-trillion dollar deficit spending are going to have negative impact on the value of the dollar until Congress pays down the deficit. Toyota had to decontent the 4Runner to keep the price affordable in the US and still make a profit. This is what Toyota does with the Fortuner in developing countries like India.

Also keep in mind that the 5th gen was probably designed on the basis of selling at a much lower volume than the 4th gen. Lower volume means reduced development expense if the intent is to keep price points at the same level as the 4th gen.

There are always going to be new toys on a new generation that are great. But my first thoughts are that the dislikes outweigh the likes with this one. I do feel that seeing it in person would change my inital reaction, that and the addition of a V8 and rear e-locker to the TE model can change my opinion a lot!

Likes:

• New Off-Road options: Crawl Control, Multi-terrain Assist, KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System), Active Traction Control
• lever operated 4WD
• Trail Edition now includes a hood scoop.
• Trail Edition will include Matte Black bumpers and flares
• Trail Edition includes Multi-Terrain ABS
• 40:20:40 Split folding 2nd Row Seat with Recline
• Rear Gate Speakers and a sound optimization mode for tailgate listening
• Sequential shift transmission
• The AC power outlet goes from 100W to 400W
• Cupholder moves back to similar location and type of that in 1999, but I see only one on the console?

Dislikes:

• Lack of V8 available on an model let alone the TE
• Lack of rear e-locker on TE
• LTD's wimpy looking wheel well trim
• LTD's wrap around bumper trim/skirt
• Look of the interior center dash stack
• Small rear cargo window make it look like the cargo area got smaller once again.
• No projectors and no LED's
• The slight overall increase in size...should have been a slight decrease in size to make it more nimbler.

I am still mad, 2 days later, have been searching ebay for '08 GX prices, ebay/autotrader/local dealers for stock of 08,09 4Runner V8 LTDs (....), looking for info on 2010 GX (nothing, except a couple of 2010 prado pix).
An '08 LC has also come into the mix (if I stretch to $50k), but in a year or so hopefully there will be '08 LCs in the mid $40's so that may be the way to go.

I guess its a good thing us enthusiasts only make up a small piece of the market, and that the marketing 'demographic' may well love the 5th gen, because if not, this will be the shortest model lifespan ever...

When we saw the first pictures, most people were disappointed. Some thought it was more like an American SUV, kind of a Explorer / Trailblazer kind of thing. The biggest dissapointment the grey plastic sides, even in the sport model. Also the towing capacity, truck space and amount of weight it can hold were all lower than most thought they should be. (The towing and the weight it can hold have been improved and the plastic sides were gone in 6 months.) Also, people hated the head room and feeling they were in a coffin, the back windows were hard to see out of.

The overall look grew on people and of course most of us loved the V8. So it finally won most of us over.

I remember all the negativity towards the looks of the 4th gen right before they dubuted so looks are subjective and will grow on most of us but it's how it performs is what really will matter in the end.

Look how drastic the change was from the 3rd gen;I thought the 4th gens were porky when I first saw them plus it sat low and lost a bit of it's ruggendness and the large unpainted plastic cladding wasn't too great either on the '03s but I figure the reaction the the 5th gen is just following suit since it'll take a little bit to adjuust to the new direction and once it's actually out there and we see what really will be available to us I think most of us will like it.

I really can't tell anything about the interior from the pics....not sure how some of you can comment so strongly one way or another about it.

Seeing a vehicle in real life and in a color you personally like can make all the difference.

I was thinking the same thing a few days ago. The last gen. Tundra does look better than the current one, the last gen. Sequoia looks better than the current model, the last gen Land Cruiser and LX470 looked way better...some of my favorites ever, and same goes for the 4Runner. The second, third and fourth gen. looks way better than the new 5th gen...from what I have seen so far. I feel as if the previous gen. LS and GS Lexus models also looked better than the current bland styling of the "l-finess" theme. However, I love the 06-10 SC430. I am cringing on what they will do to it in the next year or so with the next gen. I just have that feeling that it will end up looking like crap.

The wheels/wheel openings look too small. The center stacked is terrible looking. I hate the bulging light approach Toyota seems to slapping on everything since the last generation Celica headlights. What's with the little cut corners on the rear and back glass? It's going to date me, but it reminds me of people who were too cheap to pay for rounded corners in their high school senior portraits and ended up clipping the corners with scissors.

As with the 4th gen, I'll stop short and refrain from saying "I hate the 5th gen," though I'm not liking. Definitely not thinking of a trade-in and will hold on to my '06 for quite some time. I do like the smart key feature.

On a side note about Toyota's styling direction... The designers in both divisions got beaten with the ugly stick. There is no Lexus model out there that makes me say "I want it." The refresh on the IS and GS are terrible from the debut styling. The LS is the only good looking car in the Lexus line up. The third gen RX is all screwed up and I don't think the second gen GX will be far from it. At this point only the LF-A looks promising. But I think they will mutilate it enough that when it does finally arrive, it'll look like a plastic surgery addict with too many visits.

Sad to say, but only the new Corolla and Prius are the remotely decent looking Toyotas for what its worth. Tacoma is still a good looking truck, they didn't do enough on the refresh to screw it up. Tundra in the Crew Max or regular cab short bed variant looks good.

• There are 2 cupholders on the center console, 1 way up front and one way towards the back. Looks like a better design than the 4th gens.
• Crawl Control has 5 speeds...but cannot be in use if using multi-terrain select.
• Option for 265/70/17 (32") tires
• Auto up/down switches for all windows
• Hidden rear wiper underneath rear spoiler
• There are some Led's....the high mount rear stop light
• Optitron gauges, though probably only on the limited and rightfully so
• Eco meter...could be interesting

• I am moving the lever operated 4WD control to my dislike list as I believe this will similar to my 1999 whereas it is a part time only 4WD system. This means that whenever the lever is in 4WD the front and rear axles are locked together, no ability to run 4WD on dry ground.
  
• On the full time 4WD models, also a dislike here. There will probably be no seperate button to lock/unlock the center diff. This means that you will be forced to have the center diff locked when in 4WD Lo.
  
• Finger pull gas cap door
• Motorized antenna on some models
• No standard automatic climate control on lower level models
• Lame 245 width base tires, though they are 245/70/17's (30.5")
• 20" wheels on the limited, no 18" wheels available at all

The Canadian PDF says the standard/base tires are P265/70R17, while only the Limited gets the "upgraded" :nono: P245/60R20 tires.

What makes you think that the TE will get an e-locker? I didn't see any mention of an e-locker in any of the leaked PDF's.
