At the top of the valve, you can see the roller rocker. On the other end of the roller rocker is a hydraulic lash adjuster (small cylinder/bullet shaped guy). Basically, as your valvetrain components wear, the hydraulic lash adjuster uses hydraulic pressure to push the plunger upward to ensure that there is no lash between the camshaft, roller rocker, and top of the valve.

Basically, this means no valve jobs required down the road to maintain performance and prevent that terrible valve chatter noise that older engines get.

I personally think that modern injectors make the ticking noise. Those high pressure injectors are a noisy lot, particularly in DI vehicles.

Got it! Thanks! That's not how I envisioned it. I pictured the cam lobe directly actuating the valve in my mind.

It's been many years since I last tore down a motor. And I've never gotten into an ohc.

One problem to the injectors making the noise theory Quentin...... Pretty sure they are using the same injectors as the older 1GR-FE engine version. I had the previous version of the 1GR-FE in my 06 Runner and it was much ,much quieter. Here is the link to the engine changes made and they don't mention new injectors. Are they the same part number? I'm very familiar with the 2GR-FE (messed with them on engine dynometers) and the injectors on them were quite "ticky". Do you mean quieter in the cabin or with the hood open? Is the surge tank design significantly different between the old and new 1GR? Intake manifolds change? I don't have anything to reference w/ the 4th gen, but in general, as fuel pressure goes up, injector noise goes up too. I'd find it hard to believe that fuel pressure didn't go up w/ the new 1GR. That is pretty much the best way to get more power without increasing displacement or supercharging.
 
If you want to hear ticking you should hear the 2GR-FSE (Lexus IS350), with the hood up. It uses port AND direct injection.

Funny you mention that. The picture I posted actually is the 2GR-FSE. You can see the direct injection injectors going straight into the combustion chamber and the injectors mounted on the manifold.

Some interesting info; there seems to be big problems with carbon build-up in MANY (including Lexus) direct injection engines. To keep the carbon from building up on the back of the valves, fuel needs to pass across the back of the valve to coat it with the additives in the fuel. The 2GR-FSE is one of few (if any) direct injected engines not experiencing carbon build-up. The addition of the port injector sprays fuel right on the valves and keeps them clean. I would not buy a direct injection engine unless it is proven to stay clean. There is only a temporary fix for this carbon problem, a very involved cleaning.

That was definitely a factor when I decided to sell my GTI (2.0T, DI). The only way to clean it was to take the head off, use something like walnut shell as a blast media, and blast the carbon build-up off.
